THIS year’s Artist in Residence Program at the Camden Head Pilot Station will be with well respected Botanical Artist Gillian Scott. Gillian was a university lecturer in Biology for many years before deciding to devote more time to Botanical Art after she had studied in the UK with Mary Grierson, Chief Illustrator at the Royal Herbarium at Kew Gardens.
In 1991, Gillian was this country’s first winner of the prestigious Gold Medal of the Royal Horticultural Society (UK) and has been a member of the international Society of Botanical Artists since its foundation in 1986. She is also a member of the recently formed Botanical Art Society of Australia and last year was invited to judge the second annual exhibition held in Sydney.
Careful attention to fine detail has earned Gillian international recognition with works in such famous overseas collections as The Hunt Museum of Botanical Documentation (Pittsburgh, USA) and the Dr Sherwood collection in London. Her work is to be found in many private and several corporate collections in Australia.
As a scientific writer, editor and illustrator, she has been involved in several books of a popular scientific nature, including The Funnel Web Spider (author), The Mistletoes of South-eastern Australia (author & illustrator), Western Grasses (illustrator), The Natural History of Lake Broadwater (Editor and contributing author) and most recently, Grasses and Humans (illustrator).
Passing on her skills by teaching Botanical Art and Miniature Painting has been a frequent occupation for over 25 years, including four times for the famous McGregor College Schools in Toowoomba in southern Queensland, as well as frequent visits to regional centres in Queensland and interstate.
Gillian will present a series of workshops with a maximum of 12 students. Drawing Plants - (March 27, 28), Introductory Painting of Plants - (May 15, 16), Intermediate Painting of Plants - (July 24, 25). The cost for each part of the course will be $80. All students must have some experience in working with water-colour paints and mixing colours.
For advanced students we are negotiating with Gillian to do Master Classes and would ask that you register your interest at the Camden Haven Community College.
