ON this Remembrance Day the Laurieton RSL Sub-Branch will be commemorating one of the worst days in Australian Army history. On July 19, 1916 the 5th Australian Division and a British Division attacked a strong German position known as the Sugar Loaf Salient, near the town of Fromelles, as a feint to draw German troops away from the Somme offensive. By morning July 20, the battle was over. The attack was a complete failure. There were more troops killed than wounded. A Remembrance Day ceremony will be held on Wednesday November 11 at Laurieton Memorial Park starting at 10.55am. The Laurieton Sub-Branch will be holding a lunch in the ANZAC Room, LUSC at 12noon, for Sub-Branch members and their wives or partners. Entry is by ticket only at a cost of $10 per person available from the Sub-Branch office.
The Kendall RSL sub-Branch invites the public to attend the Remembrance Day Commemoration Service at 11am on Wednesday 11th November at the Cenotaph in the War Memorial Park, Comboyne Street, Kendall. The Kendall School of Arts Hall opposite the Cenotaph is the wet weather alternative. Anyone wishing to lay a wreath during the Wreath Laying is welcome to do so. Lest we forget
