Fruits of the rainforest

13 Aug, 2008 10:01 AM
August is Bush Tucker month at Sea Acres Rainforest Centre, Port Macquarie’s own coastal subtropical rainforest at Shelly Beach. Visitors can take a Bush Tucker tour with local Aboriginal Elder Bill O’Brien, sample the delightful cuisine from the Rainforest Cafe created with local native bush herbs and spices and learn how to cook using their fabulous flavours.

Guided Bush Tucker Tours along the rainforest walk are conducted by Aboriginal Elder Uncle Bill. Bush Tucker Tours are suitable for families and young adults and are held on Saturdays in August from 10 -12:30pm starting on 2nd August (bookings essential).

Throughout August the Rainforest Café will serve gourmet treats inspired by the bush tucker theme, such as lemon myrtle crème brulee, Dorrigo pepper prawn and caesar salad and fettucine with chicken, bush tomato and baby spinach.

Want to learn how to use native herbs and spices in cooking? Come along to cooking demonstrations by local Australian native Australian bush product grower, Barbara Barlin from Barbushco on 3rd and 23rd August. Taste the results!

Bush Tucker month at Sea Acres highlights the richness and diversity of rainforest.

Half of the plant and animal species on earth are found in rainforests and many of the medicines available today come from rainforest plants. Sea Acres Rainforest Centre is open 7 days; 9am to 4.30pm. Bookings are essential for all bush tucker month activities.

Also from 8th to 30th August visitors to Sea Acres can enjoy environmental artworks by students from Westport High. The exhibition titled Essence of the Bush, reflects students’ interpretation of the remnant rainforest in the Westport area.
