The scholarship offers $1,000 towards flight training, representing about 22% of the cost of obtaining a Recreational Pilot’s Certificate. Training is in one of the club’s two recreational aircraft, the Foxbat or the Eurofox, under the tutelage of one of the club’s Recreational Aviation Instructors.
Previous winners include Matthew Baker, who gained his Recreational Pilot’s Certificate in 2010 and is doing his HSC this year. He is planning a career as a pilot with a major airline. Trent Merchant completed his Recreational Aviation training in 2009 and is now close to obtaining his Private Pilot’s License.
“Jimi Ludriks, one of our first scholarship recipients, has been working with Slingair in Kununurra for over a year”, says club president Bill Coote.
“He learned to fly with the club at 15 then, following his HSC in 2008, he went to Sydney to complete his Commercial Pilot’s License with Basair at Bankstown.”
Applications for the 2011 scholarships are now open with a closing date of March 31st. Details and forms can be downloaded from the club’s website www.hdfc.com.au.
