Kendall commemorative service

18 Nov, 2009 09:07 AM
THE sun glimmered through the gum trees as Lone Scottish Piper - Ross Scott - played, and the soulful sounds of the bagpipes drifted across the valley.

A small but appreciative crowd gathered at the Cenotaph in the Kendall War Memorial Park to remember those who died or suffered for Australia in wars and conflicts.

Lance Gainey, President - Kendall RSL sub-Branch, opened the Remembrance Day Service with Bugler Michael Richardson playing “The Last Post”. This was followed by 2 minutes silence then Bugler Richardson played “Reveille”.

Father Jim Maloney of the Catholic Church gave an inspirational talk on remembrance of lives lost in wars and sacrifices made. He asked that we make sure those sacrifices were not in vain, by helping those in need, by tolerance and acceptance of those who have suffered the trauma and pain of war and been re-settled in Australia.

Kendall Public School students, Kaitlyn Wilkes and Joel Burton talked about war and peace, the origin of poppy month and regaled the public with a stirring rendition of the first 2 minutes silence held in London in 1919.

Towards the end of the Service Lance Gainey gave thanks to the public for attending and to the Special Guests; Father Jim Maloney - Catholic Church; Maryanne McKay - Veterans Affairs; Kaitlyn Wilkes and Joel Burton - Kendall Public School; Piper Ross Scott; and Bugler Michael Richardson.

At the onset of this discourse a renowned feathered “Aussie” icon settled on the slouch hat of the war memorial soldier with regal attention and reverence. This great symbol of Australia stayed until the speech was complete.

The Kendall RSL sub-Branch thanks the community for their support, assistance and attendance over the years and hopes for continued involvement in the Kendall Remembrance Day Commemoration Service.
