Christmas is fast approaching and local bikers will be doing their best to make sure it’s a happy one for disadvantaged children in the area.
Around 400 local bike enthusiasts are expected to take part in the annual Toy Run and load up their bikes with toys outside the Laurieton United Services Club on Saturday November 21.
Now in its ninth year, organiser Fred Payne says more and more people are watching from the streets and getting involved in the run.
“I’m estatic at the support we’re getting. It’s unbelievable. Some women have been making toys during the year for the run,” he said.
“The locals know it’s coming and they’re already asking me when they can bring their toys down to the shop (Eff Jay Footwear).”
The run is also a chance for local bikers to distance themselves from the notorious ‘bikers’ label.
“It’s just our way of helping the local community. It shows bikers have a heart,” Mr Payne said.
A wry smile comes to his face talking about people’s reactions when he parks his Harley Davidson wearing his leather bike gear.
“When I have my leathers on people walk around me in the street but when I’m dressed in my business clothes they say hello,” he said.
Salvation Army Major, Gary Cooper says the Toy Run is a great way to kick off the Salvation Army’s Christmas appeal.
“It’s a big help to the underprivileged who wouldn’t necessarily receive gifts at Christmas,” Mr Cooper said.
He’s hoping the Salvos big van at the Port Macquarie office will be over-flowing with toys on the day.
Donations can be made at either EFF Jay Footwear in Bold Street Laurieton or the Laurieton United Services Club where riders will meet at 11am and depart at 11.30am.
