Praise for locally made violin

04 Nov, 2009 10:43 AM
In a letter to Graham Caldersmith, maker and donor of the prize violin, Glenn Christensen, winner of the 2009 Kendall National Violin Competition, said:

“The violin is absolutely beautiful - it has such a gorgeous, smooth and even tone that I haven’t heard on many instruments - and it’s only going to get better! I am falling in love with the violin and haven’t stopped playing since I’ve been home.

The competition was such a fantastic experience for me. To be able to play for an enthusiastic audience, world class judges and with associate artists in an extremely positive environment makes this competition very special for young violinists hoping to have a career in music. The three other performers and I all felt very welcome in Kendall and it was a weekend I will always remember.”

Two days after Glenn won every award at Kendall, he was first in the Ronald Clifford Davis Violin Prize in Queensland with 2008 Kendall finalist Lachlan O’Donnell coming second. Both these talented young violinists have been chosen for the Australian Youth Orchestra’s 2010 International Tour. At the end of the tour, Glenn plans to use his TimberLay International Travel Scholarship to go on to Switzerland to study with Professor Rudolf Koelman who was one of the last students of the great violinist Jascha Heifetz.

On Sunday afternoon, 28 February 2010, Glenn will give a recital at Kendall School of Arts with associate artist Jeanell Carrigan. Program will be advised closer to the date.
