NORTH HAVEN resident Alan Hardy has managed to gather more than 600 signatures against council’s proposal to leave a popular reserve as bushland.
After presenting signed petitions to Administrator Garry Payne last week, Mr Hardy said he hoped council would reconsider the proposal and continue to maintain North Haven Wall Reserve located west of Leighton Close.
“We believe that the reserve, if revamped and maintained, would continue its attraction to both visitors and locals - not deter them by being unsafe and overgrown bushland,” he said.
“What we really want done is the treed area to be made safer because if left overgrown it will become a large fire hazard and houses close to the site haven’t been built to fire standards.”
However, research undertaken by Darkheart Eco-consultancy stated the area was still an important habitat for threatened species of fauna.
Mr Payne said a previous meeting onsite allowed him to further consult the community about their concerns.
“During this meeting two main issues were raised; the maintenance of Wall Reserve and the concern over proposed angle parking at North Haven beach carpark,” he said.
“I agreed there should be no angle parking and the [upper] carpark will remain as is.”
But he said decisions regarding the future of Wall rReserve would not be made until August.
Mr Hardy said he would like to thank the community for their support in signing the petitions.
“We had a really good response. We further ask council to consult with us and develop a working relationship to ultimately obtain the best possible outcome for this area,” he said.
