BOB Breen, resident of Laurieton Haven Retirement Village and Aged Care Complex is concerned about the safety of his fellow elderly neighbours.
Mr Breen told his story to the Camden Haven Courier in January. For two years he has asked Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to make crossing Tunis Street in Laurieton safer for elderly pedestrians.
Mr Breen believes there is inadequate signage to warn drivers that elderly people cross that street to access the Laurieton CBD. In fact there is only one sign facing one direction and is obscured by trees.
“At the intersection of Lord Street and Tunis and Norman St and Tunis there is no give way sign either,” Mr Breen said.
“There is one sign with “aged” people on Tunis Street further on from the turn off to the retirement village, but it’s obscured by trees and doesn’t face the bulk of the traffic.
“People drive up Tunis Street to access the parking behind the Plaza shopping centre and for people crossing the road, the cars are onto you before you know it. Elderly people aren’t always quick at crossing the road and more needs to be done to make it safer.”
Nick Gainsford, Road Safety Officer with the council said changes will happen.
“The council has inspected the area and we are currently looking at different options that could improve safety and visibility at the crossing,” Mr Gainsford said.
“Options include additional signage, a pedestrian refuge or a crossing, however the road width and pedestrian/ vehicle numbers will determine if we can implement a refuge or crossing.
“Before considering each option the council is required to complete a simple concept design and conduct traffic counts. Once this has been completed the council will advise the outcome.”
