Boral Limited in conjunction with Conservation Volunteers Australia, rehabilitated riparian corridors at Henry Kendall Reserve in order to achieve significant environmental outcomes.

Volunteers from Korea, Hong Kong, France, England and Germany worked alongside local volunteers and the Port Macquarie Green Gym until Friday learning more about local flora and fauna.

The program saw around 500 native trees planted, the installation of 100m fencing and the control of weeds to provide improved habitat for birds, frogs and other native fauna.

Green Gym Project Officer for the Mid North Coast Paul Price said this was a fantastic opportunity for locals to meet up with volunteers from around the world to improve the overall quality of the bushland.

“The result will help to establish a link between the remnant bushland in the reserve and Stingray Creek which links Queens Lake and the Camden Haven estuary,” he said.

“The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has undertaken some major weed and exotic tree removal on the section of the reserve closest to Stingray Creek and the planting will restore the native habitat in the area.”

He said the experience would give overseas volunteers the opportunity to appreciate the diversity of Australia’s biodiversity.

“Their experience with Conservation Volunteers takes them to many different regions, including beaches, mountains and sometimes the western slopes and plains,” he said.

“This project is another unique location that they get to see and having local volunteers working alongside them was an added bonus.
