 Good day for spinnaker boats

Good day for spinnaker boats

10 Mar, 2010 09:00 AM
QUEEN’S Lake Sailing Club’s fleet was boosted by the addition of seven visiting Impulse dinghies, making a total of sixteen starters on Saturday.

Just as they were due to start the fickle NNE breeze began to swing to the NE and freshen, making it necessary to hurriedly alter the position of all the rounding marks.

After a crowded start and some close tactical racing, Indefatigable was first to the windward mark. Once the fleet took off on the broad reach those boats with spinnakers began to dominate, with Indefatigable, The Scream and Domino planing away from the rest of the fleet. Kimberly and Georgie Lentz in Domino could be heard screaming with pleasure/fear as they set off after the two leaders. Unfortunately a capsize or two put them back with the non-spinnaker boats for some of the race.

At the finish it was Indefatigable (Rohan Nosworthy) well ahead of The Scream (Mark Holt) with another sizeable gap to Domino. Then came a very tight bunch who had been enjoying a close tactical battle for most of the race with frequent changes of place.

First of the non-spinnaker boats was Senior’s Moment followed by Highly Explosive, Browny’s Toy (a visitor), Killer Watt and Beaujolais. The remainder of the Impulses were not far behind, while two of our regular boats retired.

The course was a little longer than usual with most boats taking just under two hours to finish in the variable 12-20 knot wind.
