BOTH of the Laurieton United Services Club sponsored Camden Haven lower grade cricket teams once again recorded dominant victories last Saturday highlighted by a maiden century by 4th Grade’s Col Harris and a 5 wicket haul by Dave Balaam in 3rds. The bye in 1st Grade saw the Havens surrender the competition lead however they are keen to take on the Port Pirates in a two day match at Laurieton beginning next Saturday to once again stake a claim for the minor premiership.
The 3rd Grade match against Wauchope at Inmon began with stand-in captain James Palmer’s controversial decision to bowl first in very hot conditions after winning the toss. The decision was very quickly vindicated as the Wauchope batsmen had little to offer against the consistent line and length of the Havens’ bowlers. Palmer captured 3 wickets for just 19 runs in his 8 overs and Pete Hayes took another but when Dave “Beaver” Balaam was introduced into the attack the visitors collapsed. With good pace and swing he demolished the middle order to end up with the fine figures of 5 for 16 off 6 overs. Mitch Yewdall knocked over the tail and keeper Ben Dunn finished with 3 catches to have Wauchope all out for just 60 in 20 overs. What appeared to be a simple run chase began badly with the score at 2 for 2 but then Dunn (15), Palmer (10 no) and Yewdall (35 no) got into the act and put the result beyond doubt in just 8 overs to leave the Havens well clear at the top of the table. They take on the Pirates side at Tuffins next Saturday.
4th Grade captain Pete Price took a more conventional approach when he won the toss and batted against Beechwood in the heat at Kendall. Although the Havens lost an early wicket the visitors’ morale was soon shattered as Col Harris and Keegan Raccani smashed the ball to all parts of the field. The pair added a 150 partnership with Harris bringing up his first century for the club. Raccani eventually went for 53 and 3 more wickets fell quickly before Harris was finally caught for 138 with the score on 220 but if the visitors thought that was the end of it they were sadly mistaken. Captain Price came together with young Jayden Hudson to put on another century partnership, Price bringing up his half century in just 15 balls, hitting 6 sixes off consecutive balls faced and finishing on 73 no. Hudson made a whirlwind 34 no and the Havens had made 6 for 325 with only 31 overs being bowled in the allocated time. The Beechwood batsmen were never in the race and wickets fell at regular intervals. One of their batsmen showed good skill and application to put together a fine innings of 90 however he lacked support and the Havens bowlers took advantage. Raccani took some stick with the new ball but did pick up a wicket and Zac Hussein continued his good form to claim two scalps. Wayne Smith once again showed his value to the team in taking 3 for 21, Darren Hudson also bowled well for his 3 for 17 and Jayden Hudson took a wicket to have Beechwood all out for 178. The Havens continue to lead the competition and also take on Pirates at Inmon on Saturday.
