Honours even at Laurieton

01 Jul, 2009 10:13 AM
THE LUSC sponsored Camden Haven Redbacks premier league first grade side battled out a tough 2-2 draw against Port United at home on Saturday.

The game was transferred from Dixie Park Port Macquarie due to the state of the ground after recent heavy rain.

Redback supporters welcomed back former player Mitch Amidy who didn’t disappoint with two very well taken first half goals.

His pairing with Al Williams up front proved a major headache for United’s defence with Williams attracting plenty of attention and Amidy finding space a little wider out. He latched onto a good ball to open the Redbacks scoring after 15 minutes, however United equalised ten minutes later after a set play resulted in them getting a good shot away which was initially blocked with a good save from keeper Dan Westwood, however the defence failed to clear the ball and the United striker drove the ball into the net from close range.

It was game on and play swung from end to end as each team battled for control. Dave Amidy and Nathan Monaghan were particularly strong in the Havens defence while Heath Milne showed his pace from fullback with some searching runs down the left wing.

A good interchange of passing between the Haven midfielders saw Amidy again one on one with his defender after 30 minutes and he turned inside him to make space before angling towards the posts and aiming a low hard shot across the goal which snuck in on the far post for the Redbacks to regain the lead.

Camden Haven took a 2-1 lead into the sheds at half time, but knew they were in for a real arm wrestle in the second half. This proved the case with honours fairly even until 20 minutes into the second half, when the United striker appeared from nowhere to pick up a through ball and slot home the equaliser.

The final 25 minutes saw committed play from both teams as they pushed hard for a winning goal. The Redbacks midfield worked themselves into the ground, with Josh Tomasone, Daniel Trompert and Ryan Squires chasing down every loose possession and supplying good service to their forwards,

before Tomasone was replaced with 12 minutes to go. The Redbacks finished strongly winning a series of corners, however the ball just wouldn’t find the net despite their best efforts with both Squires and Al Williams unlucky with two strong headers late in the game.

As usual young Luke Bradney, in company with Dave Amidy kept things tight in the Redbacks defence and despite the draw spectators were well satisfied with the home team’s performance which keeps them near the top of the table.

This Saturday the Redbacks play Wauchope at Fairmont Gardens Wauchope.

Coach Pete Monaghan was pleased with his team’s performance on the day. “It was a hard slog. United are a stronger squad than in recent years and will put plenty of pressure on in the coundown to the semis this round.”

LUSC Reserves v Port United

Once again not the start the Redbacks were looking for conceding a scrambling goal when the Port United striker got some luck and put them ahead after 15 minutes.

The home side was then dealt a much bigger blow losing kep midfielder Lachlan Sessions with a broken leg in a crunching tackle after 30 minutes.

However, the Redbacks lifted and with five minutes to go to half time, Nathan Laws again created some havoc on the right and the ball found Sam Ward on the left and he calmly slotted the equaliser past the keeper.

This was the final result as the second half ground out an even tussle. All the best wishes to Locky from the entire Redbacks ‘family’. He shall be sadly missed on the field. Next week away to Wauchope a must win for us. Get to training lads.
