Jack attack

04 Nov, 2009 09:47 AM
Sunday saw plenty of young guns taking to the surf in Port Macquarie in Cambo’s Ocean and Earth Teenage Rampage.

The Crescent Head heavyweights took line honours in three of the four divisions contested with Ellie-Jean bagging the blue ribbon U/16 girls’ title, Jackson - the U/13 boys’ title and Holly-Sue - the U/13 girls’ title in punchy 1-metre (3ft) beach break waves at Lighthouse Beach.

The early rounds of the unique 3-round format, which was the brain child of current ASP World Tour surfer and Ocean & Earth team rider Phil Macdonald, saw some outstanding surfing performances with Port Macquarie ace Matt Banting and Ellie-Jean Coffey heading the charge to maintain dominant lead positions on the Teenage Rampage leader board in their respective divisions.

With only the top four placed surfers after three rounds in each division progressing to the final, the slate was wiped clean for the final, opening the door for potential upsets.

This is exactly what happened in the under 16 boys final, with Crescent Head ripper Jackson O’Donnell upstaging Banting on his home stretch of beach. Runner up Banting was closely followed by Ryan Hunt (Tinonee) in third and Phoenix Graham (Crescent Head) in fourth.

The U/16 girls’ final wasn’t so tight with Ellie-Jean trouncing her fellow finalists in one of the most dominant displays of the day.

After progressing through the early rounds undefeated, Ellie-Jean continued her devastating form in final, posting a massive victory that saw all three of her rivals in combination situations.

In second behind Coffey was Emily Clapoudis (Port Macquarie) with Fiona Casey (South West Rocks) third and Coco Beeby (Scotts Head) fourth.

The 13 boys final saw a super tight battle unfold between Jackson Coffey and Jack Germain (Lake Cathie) with the lead changing multiple times.

Despite Germain posting the highest wave score of the heat, an excellent 8.67, it was Jackson who found a substantial backup wave to his excellent 8.33 to claim victory from Germain.

In third was Chris Zaffis (Angourie) with Danny Shouten (Bonny Hills) in fourth.

The 13 girls saw Holly-Sue Coffey complete a treble victory for the Coffey family winning from younger sister Ruby-Lee (Crescent Head), with Chloe Astorini (Crescent Head) in third and Lily Graham (Pacific Palms) in fourth.

The action didn’t stop in the water however, with the Ocean & Earth crew running a Halloween themed day ensuring plenty of spooky fun on the beach.

Current ASP World Tour Surfer and Ocean & Earth team rider Mick Campbell was on hand to oversee the event and was super impressed with the standard shown through all divisions.

“It is incredible the level of surfing these kids are displaying and I can’t wait to see where they will be in ten years time,” he said.

“It is super exciting to be helping develop junior surfing here on the Mid-North Coast and a format like the Teenage Rampage is a perfect platform to give the grommets more contest experience with the three round system.”

The final qualifying event of the Ocean & Earth Teenage Rampage series will be held on 14-15 November at Jan Juc in Victoria. The top 4 placed surfers from the boys divisions and the top 2 placed surfers from the girls divisions from each of the 7 qualifying events qualify for the Ocean and Earth International Teenage Rampage at Cronulla on 12-13 December, 2009.
