Microgroms to Opens hit the surf

28 Oct, 2009 12:23 PM
North Haven Boardriders were greeted with sunny skies and a small southerly swell. Our dedicated juniors hit the water first, ever improving. The finalist in the Junior Shortboard were Zane Ryan, Scott Martin, Sam Yates, Jye Chalker, Brett Dukes and Luke Martin finishing up the forerunner for the monthly round.

In the Junior Longboard Division Jye Chalker surfed great and was a clear cut winner.

The Microgroms gave a fantastic display with Cohen Latimore cracking some beaut waves on his little Mal also Kody Green survived a heavy wipeout, surfed on to take out the six year old division.

In the Shortboard Division Tyrone Marshall impressed the judges with his snappy little turns. Jack and Dan Vercoe get better every comp and Jacob Marshall continued his good form from his previous round. These youngster’s are continually inspired by our senior surfers and a big thankyou to Toby Barnes for caddying for the boys.

Surfer numbers were depleted in the Senior Mal Division but competition favourite Bernard Latimore was not fazed by the late entries of Mal Bell and Andrew Cross. Both rounds went to a countback on the judges sheets.

Round 1: 1st Andrew Cross, 2nd Bernard Latimore, 3rd Mal Bell.

Round 2: 1st Mal Bell, 2nd Andrew Cross, 3rd Bernard Latimore overall winner, 1st Andrew Cross.

Ladies Mal Winner; 1st Penny Lane.

The Open Shortboard was vigorously contested with former pro-surfer Mark Spillane relegating local young surfer Toby Barnes to overall 2nd place and in 3rd place was Cathie’s surfing stalwart, Mr Consistency Barry Drewitt closely followed by Rick Ryan and Andrew Cross of North Haven. Filling the minor positions were Dunbogan’s Sean Cummins and Laurietons Chad Collyer.

With one round left, there is a bottleneck at the top of the ladder.

The last round of competition in November will decide the winners in each division and we please ask Huey to send us some decent swell for our last round.

Garry Capper was the recipient of the monthy prize donated by Sandy Feet Surf Company of North Haven and it was richly deserved and applauded by members for his determination and participation in contests.

The Old Surf Skool also donated a great prize for the month, thanks Belly.

Numbers for the teams challenge are required next round, please give your names to Helen and the contest directors will place you in the appropriate teams, this contest is free and will be a fun way to meet our northern surfing fraternity clubs.

Thursday at 6.30pm November 19 at the Laurieton Hotel will see our final committee meeting for 2009. All members welcome.
