The Camden Haven Redbacks Soccer Club boasts a proud record of achievement at both junior and senior level since its inception 34 years ago.
From small beginnings in 1975 a group of dedicated parents and members of the Camden Haven Apex Club set about creating a club capable of competing against neighbouring larger mid north coast districts.
Compete it did and with the arrival of senior players like John Ridland to the area, the senior side started to mould itself into a fiercely competitive unit, while junior teams were bolstered by talented young athletes keen to learn the skills necessary to be successful in a sport which was starting to grow remarkably in popularity amongst the junior ranks.
Fast forward 34 years. A small group of dedicated parents and supporters are still leading the club which now numbers in excess of 400 players, but need help to enable it to continue to be successful.
The club’s recent AGM failed to attract enough support to fill committee positions which is most disappointing. Over recent years those prepared to help out are in short supply even though club registrations are at an all time high.
Life member and long time committee person and ‘dog’s body’ Trevor Boyle finds it hard to understand the lack of interest in helping the club out, particularly with the number of parents now involved through their children.
“It’s not a huge commitment of your time, if the work is shared. There are so many ways people can help and take the strain off others before they get ‘burned out’. The club provides the coaches, the training, the equipment and other facilities and meetings are held just once a month throughout the season.
“We really need help. An extra ordinary meeting will be held shortly to again try and select a committee and we’re appealing for maybe a group of friends, parents or supporters to join the committee perhaps as a team and enjoy the camaraderie and sense of achievement offered through helping out your local sporting club.
The meeting time and date will be advertised shortly in the Courier.
