Lake Cathie Green
Under 8
The last game of the year in blustery galeforce conditions turned out to be a good hard tussle between two fairly even teams. Both teams had some chances early but good defence from Harrison kept Cathie scoreless. Good passing from Tyron allowed Jack to have a shot which he pushed hard past the keeper to score. The game went from one end to the other before Cathie equalised with a good shot and it was one all at half time. Jeb out on the field in the second half soon found a lot of space and some good shots at goals followed. Michael at fullback continued with his good tackles and controlled passing and Timothy was tackling and chasing well. With no subs again all the team defended well and didn’t give up. Two more goals came from good teamwork with Jeb and Michael passing to Jack in space who gave the keeper no chance with hard low shots. A good team effort this week with everybody playing hard for a 3-1 win. Thanks to our sponsor, Dave Widders Consultancy and I hope everybody practices throughout the off season ready for next year.

LUSC Lawn Bowls
This week was as successful as the previous weeks and the final of the championship pairs was played and won by Bill Hyde and Allan Beattie when they defeated Trevor Rose and Jerry Janik in a hard fought game, where the scores were level often during the game but Billy Hyde and Allan picked up a few shots nearing the end of the game. They hung on to become the winners. Congratulations to Bill, he must have played very good bowls and Allan, commiserations to Trevor and Jerry.
Next weeks championship game is the final of the Major Singles and the contestants are Fred Easterbrook plays Jerry Janik and the marker is President Jack Madeley. All the members wish both players the best of luck and may the lucky wicks be equal. The ladies game at Kew last Wednesday, played in brilliant sunshine, great greens and the winner of the lucky draw was Betty Thomas, after a long illness . Whatever happened to Dot Johnson, she always wins, I bet there will be an inquiry into that. The raffle winner was Gloria Smith again. You all know the starting time 9.30, names in by 9.15, play starts 9.30, finishes midday. What a break for you ladies to get out of the house, into the sunshine and enjoy yourself. The winning rinks to come out of the draw were the Pairs team, Colonel Sanders Hyde and the Dunbogan gossip man Allan Beattie, 2nd winning rink was Reg Boydell, noisy Len Price and John Brown, 3rd winning rink was Allan Small, Allen Bradford and Brian Johnson. First runner-up Reg Spencer, the Mayor of Laurieton Jim Turner, and A J Clarke, 2nd runner-up was the Kendall kid Noel Collins, Laurie Gartung and a visitor from Orange E Crowhurst, he came down to get warm I believe and 3rd runner-up was dear old Dave Wightman, Tubby Archer and Max Lindsey. The lucky number winners were $20 Tubby Archer, $10 Nev Simpson and $5 to Ron Newton.
The Christmas Club raffle winners were Allen Neil, Percy Fry and Graeme Holloway, $25 each to those gentlemen. The two lucky family meat pie winners, donated by Lake Street Bakery were Noel Collins and Johnnie Moore. President Jack welcomed two of our new members to the club, Merv Love and Ray Napper, I am sure you both will enjoy the club, members and the hospitality of all our members. A big welcome back after a long holiday to Alan Clarke. Visitors Ian Crowhurst from Orange welcome Ian call any time. I notice we were keeping up the tradition by giving you a prize, nothing new about that, we seem to do it every week. Sick list Ron Allen, Neville believe it or not Ripley, Ken McDonald, Don Appleby and Tony Jack knee problems. Birthdays Peter Loveday. Happy Birthday Peter. Bowlers our Annual Shield Day challenge at Lake Cathie will be played on October 9, 9.45 start, 12 ends in the morning game have lunch, refreshments and 12 ends in the afternoon, now there is only 63 players required, plus we would like a couple of reserves, so first in best dressed cost is $10 per head which covers bowl green fees and lunch, it is at Lake Cathie of course, sheets on the board so don’t dally around, race in and put your name down today, it is one of the best fun days of the year, normal dress, white or club shirt and mufti thereafter, no football boots. This years AGM Sunday September 14, 10.30am. This is the first Sunday morning for an AGM that I know of, this should be an historic day and if a handful of snooker players can’t sort out a few problems then we may as well give the mother club a hand and start pulling the tables apart. Every member should vote or find out if you can use a proxy vote.
Tuesday 19, “The Penguin” is a busy man he just loves cutting down anything that gets in his way in. This major final it was a tall poppy “look out Batman isn’t that Peter Mayne” (I am sorry Smiler). Minor Final Jimbo regains some composure but the river is calling and Life Member Jimbo Gill finds things a lot more peaceful up the river. Now Mick Banicek is a loose cannon but “Snow Drop” reckons he will sit the number one seed down one day while he cleans the table up.
Thursday 21, “look out” the rule book is flying around the room. “Is this the silver bullet for the AGM” who knows? In the Minor Final John Benson alias “The Penguin” is at it again another tall poppy goes down yes its club champ Glen Kunze. Well he gave me 76 start “sorry Smiler.” Minor Final “old Smoothie” fires up. Put him in A Grade for the trip to Wingham RSL this Sunday (away). The runner-up “I am just a country boy” Kevin Jarrett was not disgraced he beat some good players.
The double champs were finalised last Sunday Kunze and Beaver win by a black ball (Palmer and Jimbo unlucky). To Gunther Otto we start at 6pm Tuesdays and Thursdays at North Haven 6.15 sign on. Good luck at Wingham boys.
