Last Wednesday only sixteen members braved threatening conditions for a 2BBB Stableford event for which the weather turned out quite OK. Our winners were M. McLean & B. Hudson with a score of 38 on countback from G. McLoughlin & S. Madden. Third place went to T. Sutherland & T. Rose with 36 points. NTP on the 5th in A Grade was Not a Soul and B Grade went to G. McLoughlin. NTP on the 8th in A Grade was T. Rose and R. Bower won the ball for B Grade. Next week's game will be the second round of the Club Championships and the rostered starters are G. Butlin & G. Clarke. The Sunday raffle will be presided over by I. Johnston, B. Johnston & F. Paine. With the wild weather going around lately it is prudent to remember what Bob Hope once said " If I'm on the course and lightning starts, I get inside fast. If God wants to play through, let him".

A very hot day greeted 12 players last Sunday, but that didn’t stop some great golf being played at Camden Haven Golf Course. Because the first group mistakenly thought that the handicapper was late, the captain decided to play an individual stroke event. This also caused Tom Scrine to be forced to play with 3 women.

The winner of the event was Harry Keegan, a friend of John Vale who is visiting. For the 16 holes of the event, Harry had 84 off the stick and a nett score of 62.

He finished 1 stroke ahead of Carol Middlebrook and Denise Kennedy. Carol continued her great form from Tallwoods a fortnight ago, having 11 shots and a nett score of 63. The handicapper thought that he had cut enough strokes from her handicap then, but it seems as if more need to be deducted. However, one needs to point out that Carol couldn’t lose her ball if she tried. Trees threw her ball back out onto the fairway and twice she hit her ball into the water but they used their flippers and skipped back out again.

Third on a count back was Denise Kennedy, who had a gross score of 102. She was followed by David Middlebrook, who putted well, but unluckily. As he watched his playing partners (Tony and Marie Carroll) putts do a lap of the hole then fall in, his putts refused to drop.

The NTP’s were won by Jenny Jackson and Tony Carroll. There were no longest drives, because the lead group forgot to put them out?

As mentioned earlier, Tom Scrine was in a group with Jenny, Diana and Denise. While there were no falls, he did have a very interesting round, creating plenty of tension among the group. It was not surprising that Tom had a 10 on the 13th hole, as he hit his ball into the rough two fairways away. When playing his shot, he was surprised by a black snake nearby and as he was retreating he was almost hit by a ball from another group. That was just after Diana had almost hit him as well with a wayward shot.

On another occasion, a group of geese caused Denise and Diana to perform a “Synchronized Retreating” act from the approaching hissing geese.

The next event will be at Camden Haven again on October 12. It will be an Ambrose beginning at 7.30 am

Queens Lake Sailing Club

For the third week in a row we had fantastic weather for sailing with a 10-12 knot ENE breeze and clear skies.

With barely any sign of human habitation, Queens Lake must be one of very few venues still in almost pristine condition.

What more could we ask for?

Four catamarans and four mono-hulls got away to a good start for a slightly shifty first beat. As usual the A class cat, Flat Chat (Rohan Nosworthy) soon established a clear lead and was never troubled to easily be first home.

The remainder of the fleet enjoyed some close racing with the positions changing frequently as each boat made the most of their strongest points of sailing. Anything (Mark Holt) with some great spinnaker work from Sophie Holt and No Symmetry (Clayton Thomas) with lightweight daughter Jacquelyn were fastest on the reaches, While Hakuna Matata (Peter Lentz) with daughter Georgie gained most on the beats.

Not to be outdone Full Tilt (Kimberly Lentz) sailing well to her handicap, kept them in sight and finished up winning on handicap by a mere 33 seconds from Hakuna Matata, with Anything third. Then came Flat Chat, Maricat, No Symmetry, Pendragon and Mammoth.

Next week the third heat of the Spring Pointscore will start at 2pm.

Kendall Social Golf Club

On Saturday September 20, we headed off on our road trip to Bellingen with Pom not fairing the best after too much Birthday cheer the night before and requiring a sleep on the bus. On arrival some of us headed off to play golf in very warm weather. Dan gave his new golf sticks a good work out with some great shots. Others reported a few shots that proved hazardous to those on the road with some near misses reported. The rest of the contingent headed to the markets for a spot of shopping. We then all retreated to the cool and enjoyed lunch at the pub followed by some ales by the pool and a lovely dinner and some music. All had a great weekend and a big thanks to President Phil for organising the weekend and hopefully numbers are up for our next trip.

Our next social game at Kew will be Sunday October 5, with a 6.30am tee off. Hope to see you all there.

Laurieton Tennis Club

Starts October 15, 2008. Players from the last comp that are wanting to play, please contact Di Kelly on 6559 5581, by October 10. So if you have been thinking about some exercise and a social night out, this could be just what you have been looking for. Newcomers to town, this would be a great way to meet some of the locals. We look forward to seeing some new faces. See you there.

LUSC Lawn Bowls

What a ripper of a day Thursday was, beautiful sunshine, a nice breeze and the world was a wonderful place, in our tiny corner of it anyway. We only had one visitor, Sam Smallwood from North Haven, hope to see you quite often Sam and you enjoyed our company, as much as we enjoyed yours. The winners of the day were Jack Clarke, Les Townsend and Ron Morris, 2nd winning rink was Brett Mayer, Len Price and Barry Shorter, 3rd winning rink was B Molloy, Arthur Stewart and Allan Clarke. First runner-up Bob Partlett, Kevin Bogg and Clarrie Lane, 2nd B Templeton, Whitler Wayling and Mark Ryan, 3rd runner-up Robert Nixon, Keith Ibbertson and Barry Kirkland. I think all those that played were winners, it is so much better to be looking at the greens on top than looking at the roots from below. The lucky number winners were $20 to Ray Napper, $10 to Phil Gibbs, $5 to Brett Mayer. Christmas Club raffle winners were $25 to Kevin Wormold, Robert Constable and Trevor Leffner. Congratulations to all the winners and maybe just maybe, it will be my turn next week. The family pies were donated by Brett Mayer, from the Colonial Bakery in Lake Street, Laurieton and the winners of these beaut pies were F Clarke and Jack Madeley. Sick list, Tony Jack, Ken McDonald, Maurice Smith, Graeme Holloway and Alan Bradford. Birthdays Mr Wong, he must get some good presents, this is his third one this year, Brian Johnston and Brian Edwards, Happy Birthday to you folk. A big welcome back to Ron Allen after a recent illness. Now you all know about the Shield Day, we are playing Lake Cathie on October 9. Well if you want a game on that day, Bob Nixon will have the sheet with him on October 2, next Thursday, so we only have green space for 21 skips, 21 seconds and 21 leads, so be early to get our name down, no phone calls for this one. Of course it is at Lake Cathie not Kew as stated last week, 9.30am start on October 9, $10 per head, which covers green fees, a good lunch, that is cheap, there will be a raffle of course, but it will be a great day for everyone to enjoy. The Mixed Christmas party will be held on November 29, so put the date on your calendar, all the particulars will be given later, just make sure you keep that Sunday available it will be in the Tarcoola room at the LUSC. Hope everyone is fit and healthy. By the way I have to inform you Kevin Bogg is fit as a fiddle, I was misinformed about his visit to the plummmer, I have been informed he is fit and everything is working perfectly, thank the Lord. Guess what William Lovell won the members draw Friday night, yes, he did shout, I am just mentioning it for the benefit of his creditors. See you all later.

Jack High.

What a glorious Sunday morning for a game of golf. Pepe and Tony played out the final of the singles matchplay championship with Pepe just prevailing to be this years champion. Well done. In the single Stableford Rossy mastered the course to take home the voucher. Riddo came in with a massive 13 points to take home the pink shirt (too much celebrating with the soccer boys). Next week is a 2 man Ambrose so grab a partner and get to golf.
