CAMDEN HAVEN

DRAGON BOAT CLUB

The last 10 days have been a very busy time for Camden Haven Dragon boaters and their supporters. We have conjunction with Laurieton Rotary successfully participated in two “Golden Mile Days” held outside Woolworths at Lakewood and Lake Cathie shopping centres. This fund raising activity was organised and conducted by the Rotary Club with the Dragon boaters displaying their boat and handing out leaflets regarding the clubs.

A very big vote of thanks is owed to the hard working Rotarians and they can be assured that the Dragon Boat Club members are appreciative of their efforts. Details of the success of these days will be known and publicised soon. Invitations to “come and try” paddling were handed on the Rotary days together with a request to join in a bacon and egg breakfast at the rear of the Laurieton United Servicemen’s Club. This proved to be an extremely successful morning with 20 plus persons availing themselves of the opportunity to “have a go” for $2 per head. At the same time Marion Roberts of the Breast Cancer Network of Australia sold “pink ladies” which were placed in a mini field of women formation to remind us of the ever present threat of breast cancer and its survivors. Messages of hope were placed on the “pink ladies.”

If you missed our invitation to “come and try” that morning – you can at any time ring either our roster co-ordinator Molly Sykes 6559 5890 – she knows when there are times available, or our President Lyn Buckley 6559 9977 to arrange a trial paddle. Our current fund raising raffle was drawn and details of winners will be published in the Public Notices section of this newspaper as soon as possible.

To all those members of the public who continue to support us we extend our greatest thank you – without this generosity and that of the business community our club would find it very difficult to conduct its activities.

LUSC SNOOKER

Tuesday night, on Remembrance Day, 11/11/2008 we will remember John Benson defeating Peppe Green.

Minor final : Farmer Keith defeated Mal Pye.....lest we forget.

Thursday 13/11/2008 we had a great roll-up with 16 players signing up for the night's competition.

It was good to see our most improved player of the year, Ray McLaughlin, return in better health.

In the Major Final we saw Graham Palmer defeat Peppe Green after a short absence away playing golf ....Snooker's a less frustrating game anyway Peppe!

In the Minor match Col Bloomfield defeated Colin Cook.

Sunday 16/11/2008 Harold Reay Memorial Singles and Doubles Handicap was played.

It was a great day. Thankyou Glen Kuntz (our President) for doing such a wonderful job organizing the day.

Thankyou also to Ronnie Howell and Col Bloomfield for being the chefs on the day, slaving over a hot barbecue.

Thanks to all the members who turned up to enjoy a few beers with a barbecue lunch.

It all helped to make it an enjoyable event.

Last year's Singles Handicap winner, Greg Thompson, played really well to get into the final this year but he was beaten by Brian Leonard (Next year we're not telling Greg Thompson when the comp's on! ).

In the Doubles Handicap Brian Leonard & Michael Banicek got defeated by Ronnie Howell & Col Bloomfield.

I apologize to Brian for playing so badly today.

I also apologize to the committee for missing the meeting last week.

Good potting.

Michael Banicek

Sailing Club

Despite the TV weather report warning of 20 to 25 knot winds, Saturdays start saw the wind vary wildly in direction and never exceed 7 knots.

As the fleet neared the first mark the wind finally settled into a very light ESEaster much to the relief of the starter as this was the direction to which the course had been set.

After forty minutes sailing only 27 seconds separated the first three boats, with Hakuna Matata having a slight advantage over Watt Fun and Cocktail.

With the wind fading the race was shortened by two legs leaving Hakuna Matata first home one minute thirty five seconds in front of Cocktail with another nine seconds to Watt Fun.

On yardstick handicap Watt Fun (George and Sue Watt) was first from Hakuna Matata (Peter Lentz and Greg Mitchell) and Cocktail (Mark and Sophie Holt).

The smaller boats found the going tough in these light conditions but were not too far behind, with all boats managing to finish in reasonable time. Fourth was The Shark, followed by Blue Lights, Bulldog, Anything and Serial Thrilla.

Next week there will be three short races and hopefully more wind.

NHBC Anglers

Our November comp was held last weekend November 15 and 16, and what, with all the expert weather pundits predicting “Armageddon” being cast upon us for rest of the weekend after Friday nights show spectacular – big blow, light extravaganza, big bang and down pour, especially down on the beach – incredible. Those that did go out had some nice fish.

Anyway, we had a pretty good roll-up of members and visitors attend the weigh-in which was great to see and much better than expected. We had 13 true blue and diehard anglers present nine species for 53 fish to weighmaster Geoff Boese and recorder Dick Spencer.

From out on the wide “swelling” blue yonder, Mr President, Ray Robinson in with three species of 5 sand flathead to .515kg, 4 pearl perch – all within a spit of each other to .770kg, and 3 reds to .650kg. Ray’s deckie Bill Burton in with 2 sandies to .650kg and 1 pearlie at .735kg. Dick Spencer with 5 sandies to 1.125kg, at second attempt to go out.

From the estuary – men’s, Tony Morrissey (big hessian bag) with 4 species of 4 lanomullet, 2 dusky flathead to 1kg and 1 each of luderick at .530kg, and bream at .500kg. Des “ever sparkling” Sparkes with 5 luderick to .710kg and 2 bream to .500kg. Bill Harris with 5 bream to .535kg. Geoff Boese, Robert Penrose and the “Snowman” Turenen all with a dusky flathead each – Geoff and Snow at .450kg and RP at .630kg.

Off the beach – men’s – Dick Spencer with 4 salmon – new club record at 3.430kg with another hot on his heels at 3.380kg.

From fresh water, Paul Whitton with 2 nice bass at .580kg and 500kg.

Ladies brigade saw Liz Robinson – co-deckie as well to hubby Ray with 2 sand lizards to .500kg – before the “Technicolour yawn” took over. Liz forgot the “pill” on Saturday morning – next time Liz.

Junior boys saw Des (DJ) Sparkes with a sandy from outside to .530kg and from the estuary, Troy Boese with “Justa” bream.

Forty dollars secret weight won by Dick Spencer.

Two x $20 lucky anglers won by Paul Whitton and the Snowman Turenen. Fifteen voucher won by James Penrose for a Junior attending – sponsored by North Haven Bait & Tackle – thank you Kim and Darrell.

Welcome aboard new member Pat Boscheinen – good to see you back Pat.

All members note, the “Owie Jones” Memorial Flathead Fishing Day will be held next Sunday November 23, 6am start. Measure only at 3pm Henry Kendall Reserve – duskies only. Gold coin entry at measure time, winner takes all plus trophy. Also, our Chrissy party will be held on Sunday December 7, 9am start with mixed game of bowls juniors and seniors together and eats start at approximately 11am, prawns etc, and then main meal at approximately 12.30pm. Our October outing was held October 24 to 26, and there were 20 people who attended the weigh-in. Of these only eight had fish to be weighed for a combined total of 60 fish and 24 kilograms.

In the sub juniors Brent Barr was a very happy young man not only winning his section but also picking up the Darren Chapman Backhoes nominated species with a nice flathead. Dylan Baldy had a nice bag of bream, flathead, mullet and garfish to win the junior section. Allan Sandersan won the men’s section and Barry Sandersan won the veteran men’s.

Last Thursday night (13th) we had 14 people attend a boating safety coarse conducted by NSW Maritime and as a result nine of those received their boating license. Our next outing is this weekend with fishing starting at 3pm on Friday afternoon and the weigh-in is at 1.30pm on Sunday. The nominated species for the sub juniors is bream. Let’s hope for some fine weather and full bags of fish.

LUSC Men’s Social Golf Club

Sunday morning saw 15 starters for the first round of our club championships. The little storm the night before just freshened the course up nicely. Playing off the yellow markers has really shortened holes up making for really good scores. In A grade big Al leads the way hotly followed by Dunny. In B grade, Billy’s out in front closely followed by Rossy – Johnny G. Ray shot the lights out with a great score to take the voucher but lucky for the others he wasn’t qualified for the championships, he would have been hard to catch in B grade. NTP’s in A grade 9th Mick, 20th Dunny, Longdrive Rossy, Ladies hole to Dunny and second shot Casper. Dairy couldn’t wait to get into the clubhouse to tell everyone about Johns airswing on the 17th (don’t forget about people who live in glass houses Dave). Next week is second round so let’s all get out there and make em earn their trophies.

On Sunday November 16, we had 13 golfers throwing their golf balls into the ring to draw for partners to play a two person Ambrose event. The winners for the day were Jenny and Bill from runners-up Snags and Al. The CHAFT shirts went to Phil and Bake from Giggles and Dan. NTP on the 9th was Bill, 2nd shot on the 4th to Killer. NTP on the 9th to Jenny and Snags and longest drive on the 8th to Killer.

Lots of contenders for The Happy Gilmore award this week with some domestic bliss required. It was nearly DIVORCE for the Hudson’s after Al’s stray shot found Louise hiding under the tree, nice bruise I bet. Some brothers and sister rivalry too with yours truly having a bounty on her head. All in good fun though.
