Last Wednesday only eight dedicated golfers braved inclement conditions to contest a Single Stableford match. Due to the low numbers prizes were limited to one grade the winner being B. Hudson with a perfect score of 28. (28 handicap, 28 putts and score of 28!). Runner-up was T. Rose with 22 and third place went to A. Aitken with 20. NTP on both the 5th and 8th holes was won by T. Rose. Putting was won by G. Butlin with 21 putts. Next week's game will be a Single Stableford and the starters will be B. Nixon and J. Fairbrother. The Sunday raffle will be run by G. McLoughlin, T. Rose & B. Nixon. On days like this when the balls don't run one remembers Yogi Berra's comment "90 percent of the putts that fall short don't go in!”

INDOOR BOWLS
Last week we had a nice 28 indoor bowlers including 2 visitors from Darwin- being Sharyn Taylor's son and daughter-in law- Brett and Sarah. There were 3 x 3 game winners so a draw was made and Bill Hyde and Margaret Caples won the first place vouchers and Mark Ryan and Sharyn Taylor won the second place ones. So Carole Hyde and Brett Taylor each received a scratchie. Then the other scratchies were drawn for and Barbara Woolgar and Sarah Taylor, Catherine Lakeman and Bill Taylor (no relation to Sharyn and family) and Jim Cleary and Marie Griffin received the others. Hope that you scratched up something good. Don't forget our Christmas party on 2nd Dec. It should be an excellent night. A good meal and good company.

Bonny Hills Beach Hotel Social Golf
Jenny Jackson won the event of the day, which was a “Flag Race” at Wauchope last Sunday. Each player was given a certain number of shots (3/4 of handicap) to reach the 15th hole. Jenny was 10 cm short of getting her ball into the 15th hole. Consistency is the adjective which best describes Jenny’s golf and she was well suited to the new game. Jenny received a $20 voucher at the Bonny Hills Tavern. Jenny also won the Ladies NTP (2nd shot) on the 7th hole.
The runner-up was Kate Molony, who wasn’t far behind as she was about 20 metres from the hole. Kate won a $10 voucher at the hotel. Kate is a study of concentration with her golf and her diligence is paying off; lowering her handicap very quickly. Kate also won the Ladies Longest Drive.
Third place went to Geoff Irvin and his last shot was his drive on the 15th hole. This was an excellent effort after he “duffed” his first drive in amongst the club’s golf carts. These were the only three players to reach the 15th hole with their ball still in play.
In the hole on the 14th shot were Tony Carroll (also after an ordinary drive on the 1st hole) and Richard “Stitchy” Parker. Stitchy had played well on the front 9 (42 off the stick) and thought he was in with a winning show. He then dribbled his tee shot on the 10th into the pond and then again “duffed” his tee shot on the 11th. His sights were lowered. Also running out of shots on the 14th was: Phil Hancock, David Middlebrook, Marie Carroll, Roger Miles and Trevor Blackall.
Finishing on the 13th hole was: Eddie Boland, Carol Middlebrook, Diana Molony, John Mason, and Robert Lamb. John Vale was last in the event, but he was muttering something about his marker forcing him to count his penalty and his playing partners not being able to find his ball. It was everybody’s fault but his. Nevertheless, John did win a ball by winning the NTP on the 4th.
Robert Lamb’s highlight was his Men’s Longest Drive victory. Lamby was warned by Eddie Boland that he needed to wear a skirt to hit from the Ladies tee on the 12th hole. Two holes later, Eddie had to be told about skirts off the red tees. The Men’s’ NTP (2nd shot) on the 7th was shared by Geoff Irvin and Phil Hancock who were both in the hole. Geoff did it with a 2 metre putt, while Phil chipped in.
It does need to be noted that Stitchy and Trevor Blackall won the lottery ticket in their match with Phil Hancock and David Middlebrook, but there was considerable controversy over the result. Firstly, Stitchy made up the rules and did all the scoring. Secondly, the group in front of this group gave some assistance to the winners, as on the 2nd hole, David Middlebrook’s ball was found in a crater in the bunker and on the 12th hole Phil’s ball was found atop a mound of sand. Thirdly, on the 8th hole, Phil and David were on the green for 3 and Stitchy played this awful topped chip which bounced in the long grass, firstly to the left, then to the right and the barely made it onto the green and then, through divine intervention, sped off into the hole for a par. The opposition was not impressed.
Wauchope is the venue for the next event, which will be a Stroke event, doubling as the last round of the Club Championships. The date for this event is December 7 and play will begin at 7am.
Next years calendar of events has been booked and variety is the name of the game. Play will take place on 7 different courses. There will be over 12 different events and 2 pre-golf, mid-winter breakfasts, 4 away trips, a big variety of Lunches and BBQ’s and a variety of prizes to the winners and runners-up. Ladies, Men and beginners are all welcome.

This week Camden Haven completed a good win against Port Medicine Chest. Batting first we finished at 1 for 59 after our first 25 overs, due mainly to some solid batting from Abbey Raccani and Liam Coulter who combined for an opening stand of 46 runs. With 9 wickets in hand this set us up for compiling a good score in week 2. We had to back this good batting up with some accurate bowling and this is just what happened. We were sharp in the field and everyone contributed with the ball and at the end of week 1 Port were in trouble at 8 wickets down for 69 runs. In week 2 Conor Haswell and Blake Hudson batted sensibly and with useful contributions from Blayne Bignell, Sam Langley and Sebastion Grimson our total reached a formidable 114. Batting second and needing 45 to win with only 2 wickets in hand, Port were knocked over with only 2 runs added to their score. Well done to Hannah Trompert who took a screamer of a catch at square leg to dismiss their top scorer and danger man. Well done team on a great effort. See you at training at 4:30 pm on Monday. This week’s game is against Port Filta Fry at Kendall commencing at 8:30 pm.

Saturday's races were intended to be short and sweet, with a brisk NW wind making the planned three races fast and exhilarating.
Even as the course was being set the wind started to freshen and swing more to the South.
The start was a bit ragged but soon the six starters were battling up the first beat into around 20 knots, with No Symmetry being the first around.
From there the excitement mounted as they took off in clouds of spray. One of the Lasers was first to capsize at the gybe mark, but all completed the first three legs. By now the gusts were exceeding 30 knots and the first catamaran to capsize did so just to windward of the rescue boat and soon drifted by so close that one helper could just step onto the upturned hull.
At this point No Symmetry also came past at great speed with Emily full stretch on the trapeze. Thinking that they had completed the first race their attempt to change course resulted in a spectacular capsize with Emily flying through the air to land halfway up the mainsail.
With the wind and waves rising and two boats needing help it was decided to abandon racing for the day. Unfortunately Serial Thrilla sustained quite some damage to its mainsail whilst the rescue boat was attempting to drag its mast out of the mud.
Well done to all who made it back to shore unaided, especially Paddy and Tom whose grins of achievement were great to see.
Maybe next week will be perfect.

Our “Owie Jones” dusky flathead memorial comp was held last Sunday November 23. We had 17 members roll-up at Henry Kendall Reserve at measure time. Albeit the atrocious conditions – the lot, there were 12 duskies measured ranging from 36-50cms with half of them being abled to be released.
The Boese family – Geoff with six, “Nan” and Troy with one each fared the best. Tony Morrissey with two and Liz and Ray Robinson with one each, Geoff “took the dough” and trophy – congrats to you Geoff on a job well done.
Thank you to Onni Kerr and Steve Rowe for the snags and wingets and for Tony at the “cooking station,” and, to all who participated and turned up – great. Owie would have been proud of us all.
Hope to see you all again next year, once again, thank you all for your support.

Fifteen starters for the second round of the club championships, it felt like the middle of Winter not a week away from Summer to start the morning. Big Al was a no show so it looks like Dunny has got A grade sewn up. In B grade only two shots separates about four players, there is still plenty of golf to be played so it is anyone’s game. NTPs in A grade 9th Slate, 10th Ruddo and Londrive to Slate. B Grade 9th Dave, 10th Mick Moore – Longdrive Riddo, ladies hole to Riddo and 2nd shot Casper. Next week is the final round of the championships. Thank God no more stroke play for a while.
Our Christmas party is on December 7, at the LUSC so keep that date free. Eagles nest has reached the maximum of 12 balls, who will be the lucky one to win them.

Dragon Boat News
The weather has not been kind lately, however it is hoped that the new paddlers will come back regularly and enjoy their new experiences. (It doesn’t rain every Thursday). The transfer of our sweep in training to another club means Lyn must be in every boat until another sweep is given approval to take over without her, this will greatly increase her workload. We can possibly give her assistance in other areas. Dragon boating is highly organised with local clubs such as ours required to have coaches, sweeps and volunteers attend comprehensive training courses. Recently Dragon Boats NSW received a major award as a sport which best promotes safety particularly through their “sweeps” training courses. Some dates to remember – our next meeting December 2, 7pm at LUSC. Our Birthday BBQ 5.30pm (after paddling) on Thursday December 4, at the rear of LUSC RSVP Saturday November 29.
Recently we were fortunate to be the target group for Laurieton Rotary’s fund raising via two “Golden Mile” days – a cheque for the amount raised on these days will soon be presented to us. We expect these funds will go some way towards paying for our boat’s road trailer which was built by Bennetts’ Steel at Wauchope in conjunction with Robert Rule. Our next project is to build the second cage to From Page 29
store the trailer so we are hard at work to raise the money as we cannot expect to have the required steel donated as it was for the first one.
Paddling sessions are held Tuesday morning, Thursday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday mornings – no matter what your ability you will always be welcome – you just need to be aged over 12 years. Membership $80 a year plus $5 week paddling levy.

LUSC Lawn Bowls
Well we got a game in at Lake Cathie last Thursday, oh well three parts of a game anyway before the heaven’s opened up and dumped three inches or 173mls onto us in under one hour, but we all saw it coming and made it to shelter in time. There were some close and exciting games and the winners to come out in the draw were Brian Malloy, Ken Price, Lennies little boy and Wrinkles Woodhouse, 2nd winners were John Read, Percy Fry and Sam Smallwood, 1st runner-up Bob Constable, he has not missed on a prize for the last six games, sort of a welfare refuge for him, G Ferris and C Lane. The lucky number winners were $20 Doug Porter, $10 Scottie Wyper and $5 to Gordon Ferris, 2nd runners-up Ron Newton, R Collins and Peter Loveday. The Christmas Club raffle winners were Pommie Bennett, Brian Malloy and mister George Wise again. Twenty five each to those lucky gents. Visitors, Ken Price from Lemon Tree Passage, Joe Franick from the Entrance, and it was great to see Steve Ryan back playing bowls with us again. Sick list John Moore had half a cut off ear last Thursday, it looks a bit chewed to me, he may have been watching a special movie on his DVD. Also the Mayor of Laurieton is laid up, Dennis McLeuan and Jim Lennox, may have got his hair in a knot. Also Ken McDonald, he informed me that he would like to thank all the club members for their cards, good wishes etc, and enquiries regarding his health problems of late, whilst he is home at present he has to enter the Mayo Hospital at Taree for bowel surgery on December 4, I, and I am sure all his friends from far and wide, wish him a complete recovery and is back bowling with us very soon. Birthdays Mark Ryan 69 and the man everybody knows, and he thought everyone had forgotten his birthday, but Pommie Bennett is now 66, he told someone I suppose I have missed out on my free schooner. Don’t be afraid old man you will get the same as the rest of us get. The two lucky bowlers that won the meat pies, family size were Pirate Collins and the biggest spender in the club Don Appleby, he tried to sell it, help pay for his petrol to the club, but he got a free lift.
Anyway the sheet will be on the noticeboard for the club championships as soon as the Xmas list comes down. The format is the same as last year. Major singles, minor singles, pairs and triples. Nominations will close on December 30. Santa will be gone and the games will begin early February, so you will have a few weeks to practice so get your name on the sheet pronto.
That is it for now, see you all at the Christmas party on the 29th, hope you win heaps, enjoy a VB or two, if you don’t like VB give me a shout.
Jack High.
