FOR the second successive week the Laurieton United Services Club sponsored Camden Haven Cricket Club teams have had success and they are now lead the competition in each grade. Jamie King, Brian Yewdall and Col Harris all scored half centuries in their respective grades and Andrew Howe and Keegan Raccani took the bowling honours with 4 wickets apiece.
In a very important top of the table clash against Port City at Laurieton Oval, the 1st Grade side bowled first after losing the toss and did a great job in restricting the highly rated Port batsmen to four runs an over. A tight start saw just 26 runs scored in the first ten overs and it was Dave “Beaver” Balaam who got the breakthrough beating the batsman for pace and the catch going to keeper Jamie King. With the score moving on to 63 it was the return to form of paceman Chris Yewdall that destroyed the Port City middle order as he captured 3 for 40 from a good 8 over spell. With Captain Nathan Kerr chiming in with 2 wickets and Al Williams picking up his first for the season the visitors’ innings was decimated. To add salt to their wounds the Havens fielding was on fire with smart work by Andy Hall and Matt Ridgewell leading to run outs and when Ridgewell knocked over their number 11 they were all out for 148 in the 38th over. The Havens’ run chase began badly losing Wiiliams for 3 but then Hall and King got the innings back on track before Hall (28) went with the score on 40. Sam Kerr’s season didn’t improve with another LBW decision going against him but with King and Dan Minns in good form the score progressed at more then 5 an over. King’s form has been impressive of late and he again looked in great touch scoring another half century. He and Minns (23) put on a game breaking 55 and although another couple of wickets went down the Havens cruised to victory in 26 overs with King unbeaten on 60. As clear competition leaders the Havens will now have a rest next weekend with a bye.
The 3rd Grade side remained competition front runners by 18 points with a convincing win over second placed Port Pirates at Inmon. Sending the visitors in to bat first the Havens bowled tightly to restrict the scoring to 4 runs an over. Mitch Yewdall (4 for 27) bowled with good pace and bounce and continually had the batsmen on the back foot. Dan Westwood chipped in with a wicket and with a run out the Pirates innings was in tatters at 6 for 80. Andrew Howe then sent the knockout blow, taking the last four wickets, all bowled to have the Pirates all out for 139 in 30 overs. The Havens set about the chase in positive style with Ben Dunn (18) and Dean King putting on 39. Brian Yewdall joined King at the crease and the pair put on 54 in just 6 overs before King was out for a hard hitting 40. Yewdall and Westwood (20) continued the runfest with a whirlwind 45 partnership to have the result beyond doubt and although “Westy” lost his wicket the Havens easily achieved victory in 16 overs with Yewdall remaining 51 not out. The Havens take on Wauchope at Inmon on Saturday.
4th Grade became outright competition leaders with a convincing win over Macquarie Hotel at Kendall. Batting first, the visitors batsmen were always struggling and although they scored at over 5 an over the regular loss of wickets had the Havens in control. Young Zac Hussein again impressed with the new ball to take 1 for 15 off his 5 overs but it was Keegan Raccani who destroyed the innings with 4 for 37 from 7 overs. Nathan “warrior” Edwards bowled with his usual enthusiasm to pick up 2 wickets and Daniel Trompert’s return to the bowling crease saw him bowl with pleasing economy. Once again Darren Hudson showed his ability to finish off the innings with 3 wickets and Macquarie were all out for 111 in just 22 overs. The Havens began the run chase in great fashion as Edwards and Col Harris scored at over 7 runs an over to have the visitors in trouble. Harris dominated the proceedings with a punishing innings of 75 not out and although the Havens lost 4 wickets they easily cruised past the target in 17 overs. They take on Beechwood at Kendall on Saturday.
