African drums and dance will have the district rocking

In a few days the Camden Haven will be rocked by exciting African drumming and dance when Baala Baajo from the Gold Coast visit to present workshops and a concert.

“Come sing....come dance..” is one of the Passionate Percussion events spanning three days this coming Friday Saturday and Sunday. Authentic drumming, dance and singing by these traditional East and West African performers will have you tapping your feet or even joining in their vibrant and dynamic rhythms. Baala Baajo have visited the region before and by all accounts they are one of our area’s favourite music groups. Never having played in the Camden Haven before they are looking forward to meet locals at the North Haven Bowling Club on Saturday 26 May and at the Slice of Haven on Sunday where they will give workshops.

The “Passionate Percussion” series will open with South Australian Nick Parnell, voted Australia’s most exciting concert percussionist byABC 24 Hrs Magazine. Nick will wield his “crystal mallets” on vibraphone accompanied by piano at St Columba Anglican School Port Macquarie on Friday 25 May.

The vibraphone, a percussion instrument with a double row of tuned metal bars above a tubular resonator, has a mellow and smooth tone, well suited to the classical works that Nick will play at his 8pm concert.

Nick Parnell has studied music at the Elder Conservatorium up to doctorate level and has been praised for his virtuosity and musicianship. If you think that percussion music is all about drums - think again and come along to a wonderful music experience - an opportunity that is not readily available in our area.

Tickets to all the Passionate Percussion events are available at North Haven Bowlo, Book Heaven in Laurieton and Kendall Bottle Shop, via the website www.chm.org.au or by phone to 0401 608 240.
