Renee Smith had an idea about working with animals. They appeared so fluffy and cute. So as part of Camden Haven High School work experience program she trialled work at Camden Haven Veterinary Clinic, mucking out the cages, cleaning the floors and comforting the animals. She loved it. So much so that when an opportunity for casual work was offered she jumped at it. She showed great aptitude and this led to an offer of a school based traineeship in Animal Care by local VET, Gavin Rippon. Renee is now six months into her two year traineeship and couldn’t be happier. As part of her HSC studies she goes to school three days, works one day and attends formal training one day a week at TAFE.
Mr Rippon says the experience has been an eye opener for both himself and his staff.
“To see someone so young commit so completely to her learning is a credit to Renee. She manages school, work and her training with a positive attitude. She’s certainly developing strong skills in this field.”
Renee intends to finish her HSC and receive a Certificate II in Animal Care before continuing her studies to become a VET nurse. Enquiries regarding school based traineeships can be directed to Mr David Hamilton at Camden Haven High School 65568100.
