Mid North Coast Girls Surfriders Winter Championships were held in wintery conditions at Rainbow Beach Bonny Hills on Sunday 10 June 2012. Forty two dedicated surfers mustered at the beach at 7.00 am and were greeted with a very chilly westerly wind making the surf conditions off shore but bitterly cold. The Club took advantage of the wintery conditions giving our members a Mid North Coast Girls Surfiders matching beanie and scarf when they registered for the Winter championships so they could rug up and keep warm.
Threatening storm clouds hovered above us however by mid-morning the sun managed to shine for a short time generating enough heat to defrost and enjoy the consistent 3 to 4 feet sets with the odd 6 foot set sneaking through as high tide progressed.
The girls’ courage, determination and dedication to the sport of surfing ensured some amazing surfing not only for themselves but spectators alike. All seven divisions were hotly contested and the Winter Champions for 2012 are:
Open Longboard: Kelly (Slater) Fyfe
Intermediate Longboard: Robyn (Parko) Wallace
Mini Mal: Taylee Eames
Open Shortboard: Taylee Eames
Intermediate Shortboard: Georgie Farlow
Beginner Girls No Caddy: Hanna Lindeman
Beginner Girls Caddy: Isabella Turnbull
Encouragement Award: Georgie Farlow
The Club members, family and friends also displayed their generosity with a donation box located in the club canteen where they were encouraged to drop in their loose change. We are proud to announce a total of $150.00 was raised for the “Give Me 5 For Kids” charity.
