PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council, in conjunction with the Hastings LGA Floodplain Committee, is preparing an updated Flood Study for the Camden Haven River and Lakes System.
Director Development and Environmental Services, Matt Rogers said the focus area for the Draft Camden Haven River and Lakes System Flood Study incorporated the Camden Haven River ocean entrance upstream including the Camden Haven River, Herons Creek and Stewarts River.
“The previous Camden Haven Flood Study was completed more than twenty years ago and due to changes in weather and climate conditions along with shifts in development trends and improvements in flood modelling, there was a justifiable need to prepare an updated study for the area,” Mr Rogers said.
The Flood Study defines flood behaviour in and around the Camden Haven River and the Lakes System. Information gathered in the Study included flood flows, velocities, levels and flood extents for a range of flood events under existing floodplain and catchment conditions. It confirmed that the existing flooding problem in the lower Camden Haven River system is real and has the potential to threaten life and cause damage to property.
“This study will provide Council, the NSW SES and community with valuable information for use in floodplain management and reduce the flood damages that could be experienced by residents of the lower Camden Haven River system,” Mr Rogers said.
The Draft Flood Study information is currently on exhibition online and at council offices until Friday, 14 September 2012. Council and the Hastings LGA Floodplain Committee invites community members to submit comments on the Flood Study for further consideration and review. Submissions must be received by Council in writing by close of business Friday, September 14.
An information session will be held at Jubilee Hall, The Boulevarde, Dunbogan on August 30 from 3pm to 7pm. Representatives from Council, the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) and consultants Worley Parsons, who have prepared the Flood Study will be available throughout the day to answer any questions.
