Gold on Bold, the street parade, was a success. Despite torrential rain that morning, the weather broke long enough for many hundreds of smiling people to line up with balloons and Australian flags and cheer the champion as she waved from a 1966 gold Mustang convertible.
Nothing was going to stop the Camden Haven community celebrating a golden moment with Shelley.
The Camden Haven Community Band lead the parade, followed by children from Shelley's former soccer club, the Camden Haven Redbacks, then Shelley. As the parade rolled towards the Laurieton Hotel members of the community fell in line behind the convertible to keep cheering.
The red carpet was rolled out at the Laurieton Hotel, where the welcome home party was held, then the heavy black clouds burst forcing hundreds inside the hotel, ducking for cover under street awnings or dashing for their cars.
Shelley said she was amazed by the support shown in the many hundreds of smiling faces lining Laurieton's main street.
"Driving down that street today was amazing," Shelley said during her speech at the Laurieton Hotel.
"I was more nervous before the parade than before any of my fights in Glasgow I think. To me it's easier to step into the ring and get punched in the face than prepare for the reception I received from the community, it was a surprise. I really appreciate all the support, I appreciate everyone getting up in the middle of the night to watch the fights, I appreciate everyone who supported my fundraising for training and sponsorship from local businesses which meant I could really focus on achieving this gold medal. It belongs not just to me, but to everyone in the Camden Haven."
Shelley was honoured by local politicians Leslie Williams MP and mayor Peter Besseling as an inspiration to aspiring local sports stars and a great role model for anyone with a dream.
Daphne Shaw, Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 1990 for the sport of lawn bowls, was at the parade and hotel to congratulate Shelley.
Daphne shared an comment with the Camden Haven Courier: "When I came home from the Commonwealth Games and the community put on a parade for me, I had two broken ribs, from lawn bowls! It's not the most physical sport, but after we won gold Robert Parrella lifted me up and spun me around and broke two of my ribs. Shelley comes home from the games after boxing and looks fantastic, not a scratch or bruise on her!"
Later this week Shelley will head back to the Australian Institute of Sport to prepare for the Boxing World Championships in South Korea in November. Then her sights are set on the Olympics in Rio 2016 and Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in 2018.
