The Herons Creek Chapel volunteers said the response to the cemetery working bee on Saturday was positive.
“Clearing years of accumulated soil and weeds around a few forgotten grave sites, resulted in an astonishing find,” organiser Martin Parish said.
“When the hardened clay was removed from the surrounds of a very old headstone it revealed a small cement pad with a tiny well, lined with miniature coloured tiles. It became clear as we removed soil, that it contained dozens of these tiny tiles.
“From the tiles left on the headstone, we discern that Joyce Evans, born 17 April 1923, died 28 April 1929, was buried there.”
The volunteers are now interested in the history of this little girl and her family.
“We hope to return the tiles to the cement pad, in time for the Heritage Festival event on Saturday May 2 when the cemetery will be open for inspection and a guided history tour of our local Anzac heroes,” Mr Parish said.
“In looking into the previous research done in August 2010 by Kevin Mitchell and Ruth King on behalf of ‘the Australian Cemetery Index website’, Joyce Evans is the daughter of Oswald & Ada M.
“We do not have any records of this family. It appears Joyce’s parents are not buried at Herons Creek Cemetery.”
If you can throw any light on this little girl’s life, please contact Pastor Martin Parish on 6586 3845 or mobile 0411426427.
