The $7 million project will get underway on Monday, and will affect two sections of the link road between Ocean Drive and the Pacific Highway.
Significant earth works will level out some sections of the road. Both ends will be re-built, and a four kilometre stretch in the middle will be resealed.
Improved road-side drainage will assist Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in managing maintenance costs.
Council's group manager, Gary Randall, looked forward to a better road.
"The main objective is to improve safety and extend the life of an important arterial road," Mr Randall said.
Council estimates indicate about 1500 motorists use the road daily.
Motorists are advised to be mindful as construction at both ends is undertaken simultaneously.
Mr Randall said the location of the work, with a small number of residents in the area, meant the work could be undertaken quickly.
"It's a good location to progress it," he said.
"It's not as easy in the CBD or a metropolitan environment."
The council awarded the tender to Queensland company Doval Constructions at the March general meeting.
The project is jointly funded by the Council and the Australian government's Roads to Recovery program.
