Jim served on the board for 15 years and in that time the club undertook major, multi million dollar renovations and merged with the then, Camden Haven Golf Club and Kew Bowls Club, creating the Kew Country Club.
At the Kew club the board oversaw significant improvements to the golf course and the installation of two new bowling greens.
Jim said he has fond memories of the club and its development over the years.
“I started out as the bowls organisers for LUSC and stayed in that role for five or six years,” he said.
“My wife and I actually honeymooned in the area in 1989. We both really loved the place.
”I really enjoyed being involved with the club. It was a great time but there were some difficult times, particularly with the mergers of the clubs.”
Jim said his health issues became too much and he made the decision to resign.
The 81-year-old was looking forward to some relaxation time but suggested that he would consider getting back on the bowls green for a game every now and then.
“I am feeling pretty good now and enjoying having a break. I certainly do miss the board a bit but I still get to see everyone at the club,” he added.
LUCC and KCC chairman Wayne Poll praised Mr Smith’s service at board level.
“He was very popular among the membership and a very reliable board member,” he said.
“Jim was there through the tough times as we progressed the club. He certainly helped to establish the club to where it is.
“He has been an excellent board member.”
LUSC and KCC secretary manager Robert Dwyer paid tribute to Jim's service to the members and the wider community.
"Jim's been a strong contributor to the board," Mr Dwyer said.
"He has a passion for the clubs and the community. It has been a pleasure to work with him over these years. Jim is a popular member of the club and understands the responsibilities of being a director.
"The management and staff wish Jim well."
