The Reds made the perfect start when a poor clearance from the Saints’ backline fell at the feet of new striker Brad Thompson who pumped the ball into the net.

Both teams had a fair share of possession with the visitors relying mainly on a kick-and-chase game. The Redbacks on the other hand were playing a more settled style and were passing the ball around with purpose.

The home team were rewarded five minutes from the break when a quickly taken free kick found Adam Morris with time and space to chip the keeper. At 2-0 the Reds looked in control of the match.

The second half opened with greater intensity with the Kempsey side throwing more players forward looking for goals. They managed to pull one back with 20 minutes to go when a non-contested header was slammed away from the edge of the box. The Reds managed to dig deep and, with fresh players off the bench, held on for a tense 2-1 win.
