It is easy to think brushing your teeth is just about squirting some toothpaste on a brush and scrubbing back and forth.
But as your dentist will tell you, how often you brush, how long you brush for and your technique can have a major impact on how effective your brushing is.
For example, did you know the Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends you should brush for a minimum of two minutes, twice a day?
It recommends using a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and flexible neck to remove plaque and debris without damaging teeth and gums.
Some find powered toothbrushes a better option, and if the kids have one decorated with their favourite cartoon character, bedtime brushing battles can often be avoided.
Don’t forget to brush your tongue – this reduces bacteria in your mouth and helps keep breath fresh.
Ask your dentist about what toothpaste is best for you or your child.
But if you’re solely relying on brushing, you’re missing out on cleaning those areas between your teeth. This is why flossing should be an essential part of your oral care routine in order to remove the plaque from hard-to-reach areas and, in turn, help prevent gum disease, tooth decay and bad breath.
Flossing is made easier if you learn the correct technique (a dental professional can assist you). Using a floss threader or floss pick can help those who struggle with the traditional technique.
