The 160 hectare parcel of land is on the eastern side of Ocean Drive between Lake Cathie and Bonny Hills, and includes the existing Lake Cathie Public School as part of the site.

Council is working with the landowner to ensure the planning controls for the site match the concept plan that has already been approved by the State Government in 2012.

This alignment and co-ordinated approach will assist in streamlining the approvals process, meaning housing will get to the market more quickly.

Once complete, the new development will contain around 1,000 new dwellings providing a wide range of choice, from detached houses on larger lots, to townhouses and dual occupancies.

A new village centre will also take pride of place as the area grows giving a range of convenient retail and dining experiences.

“Protecting and enhancing our natural environment is an important factor in any new development, and there will be about 75 hectares of environmental open space for the community to enjoy,” said council director Matt Rogers.

“This includes an environmental corridor, constructed wetlands and lakes that will protect important habitat and allow fauna movement.

“Easy access will also be provided to the nearby Rainbow Beach, and walking and cycling tracks, parklands and sporting fields will ensure the community has access to a broad range of outdoor activity spaces whilst encouraging active lifestyles,” Mr Rogers said.

The area is home to the Lake Cathie Public School which was opened in 2015, and the proposed changes may also include the construction of another new school to cater for future growth.

“This is a wonderful location, and the proposed changes will encourage efficient development and increase housing choice within the Port Macquarie-Hastings,” added Mr Rogers.
