I recently drove up to Coffs Harbour and back, and I can’t believe the driving behaviour of today’s drivers. I’m not talking about the phone using drivers, they are always there, but it’s the ones that I call ‘highway haemorrhoids’ that just defy belief.

They sit so close to the vehicle in front that you would swear they were being towed. I see them so close to the back of caravans or trucks that it is impossible for them to see anything past that vehicle. If the vehicle in front stops suddenly they will too – by running straight up the back of it. I mean if the vehicle in front is doing the speed limit, sit back a bit.
By becoming a ‘highway haemorrhoid’ does not mean that the vehicle in front is going to go faster just to make you (and the Highway Patrol) happy. The one in front who speeds up to get you off his tail is the one going to get booked, not you.
I see adds on TV, police and others going on about the high road toll but when you see the silly driving behaviour of so many drivers I personally can’t believe it’s not higher than it is. And then there was that Assistant Police Commissioner some time ago saying that if you turn 70 you should consider giving up your driver’s license. One of the silliest things I have ever heard.
You will never get the road toll to zero unless you take every car and other vehicle off the road, and I mean EVERY car. Leave just one and will hit something.
