Local groups Charles Sturt University, - Faculty of Science and CSU Green, Port Macquarie-Hastings Sustainability Network and SkillsLink Training are behind the organisation of the public forum and its aim to raise awareness, encourage discussion and networking related to food sustainability local issues.

“If people are interested in where their food comes from and how it’s produced, they should come along,” organiser Nigel Urwin said. 

The event is also a fundraiser for The Lost Plot, the Port Macquarie Community Garden.

“It’s important to ensure the garden is kept open and running and to buy more plants for the garden,” organiser Deborah Doyle said. 

Fair Food Week runs between October 15 until October 23, and in 2016 the themes of agroecological farming (agriculture partnered with nature) and promoting sustainable, healthy eating habits feature. 

The evening on October 17 will consist of a screening of Fair Food, a documentary which reviews Australia’s Food System. 

The film viewing will be followed by an interactive audience and panel discussion with representatives from local organisations including REAP ( Oz Harvest), Hastings Landcare, Community Garden, local farmers and food managers, Sustainability House,  Farmers/Food Markets and Tastings of Hastings. 

Ms Doyle said the event was also important to educate the community on what groups are currently doing to promote food sustainability and to connect with them for ongoing support. 

People are asked to donate $5 to The Lost Plot on the night.  Light refreshments will be provided.
