Alan and Jill represented NSW in the 2016 Australian Masters Squash Championships.

The two-week-long event in early September attracted over 550 players from all states of Australia. Alan and Jill played in the teams events, held over one week of the tournament.

Jill’s team won their division. Alan’s team managed runner up in their division.

Alan said while the competition on the court is fierce, off the court players enjoy the social side of competing at the representative level.

“To become a member of the NSW Masters Squash Association the only criteria is you must be over thirty five years old and enjoy playing squash,” Alan said.

“There is a tournament held every month somewhere in the state. Once a year the state titles are held. To represent NSW in the Australian titles you must have played in the state titles and at least two of the monthly tournaments.

“Each player is given a national ranking and this ranking allows the Australian Masters to place you into equal competitive divisions for the Australian titles.

“Jill and I only played in the teams events, the body now dictates how many games we can play!”

Teams consist of three active players from all over NSW graded one, two and three in a division.

During the week competitors play against a different state each day.

“In some cases you will have to play twice on the same day,” Alan said.

“At the completion of the tournament they hold a presentation dinner. Jill and I were also presented with a commemorative badge for participating in twenty Australian Titles.

“During this period we have both won three Australian Titles. We both enjoy playing squash and the friendships we have made over the years. We hope to continue playing as long as the body allows!”
