Last year some beach goers at Rainbow Beach spotted a large brown snake under the lifeguard tower.
Several sightings of brown snakes in this area have been reported to FAWNA and representatives have spent significant time at Rainbow Beach Reserve in recent weeks.
Port Macquarie-Hastings acting director Liam Bulley said council and FAWNA have responded to several snake sightings and have already relocated two snakes this season from under the lifeguard tower at Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills.
“As we move into lovely warm days, we will see a lot more snakes coming out of hibernation as they first emerge from dormancy in search of food,” Mr Bulley said.
According to FAWNA’s vice President Rod Miller, snakes, especially eastern browns, are territorial during the spring and may become aggressive if approached.
“The community are reminded not to approach snakes under any circumstances and do the right thing by not interfering with them and to contact FAWNA immediately of any sightings,” Mr Miller said.
If you see snakes or other native wildlife in need of help contact FAWNA's 24 hour hotline on 6581 4141.
