They will take two crews to round three of the North Coast Surfboat Series.

Boat captain Tony Kee said the Bullsharks were the surprise packets of the first two rounds on October 15.

“We’re all excited to see if they can improve on their fourth-place finish from rounds one and two,” he said.

“They just need to keep doing what they’re doing because it worked for them.”

Kee thought it would take the Bullsharks a while to get going this season.

“They’re a great crew who are enjoying what they’re doing,” he said.

“One of the hardest things in surfboats is to keep a crew together so when you do, you start the season well.”

Kee said his crew had fond memories of their time up there.

“South West Rocks can be flat, but it can also have a couple of heavy waves as well,” he said.

“It’s a great spot for racing and conditions look good for this weekend.”

As well as the Bullsharks, Wauchope-Bonny Hills will take their reserves crew to race this weekend.

“Our reserves will need to move quickly to stay ahead of the pack,” Kee said.

There had been an increase in faces around the boat shed in previous weeks which the club hoped would lead to another crew.

“It’s great to see so many faces around the boat shed,” Kee said.

After missing rounds one and two, Port Macquarie Surf Club will be back in the water.

Boat captain Rick Rolff was unsure what to expect up at South West Rocks this weekend.

They are, however, taking a couple of crews north to see what they can do.

“We’re taking two masters crews up there this weekend in our 120 and over ladies and 160s men,” he said.

Recently, Port Macquarie has had relative levels of success on the water up there.

“We picked up a silver medal at the country championships there last year, but this year we’re a bit of an unknown quantity,” Rolff said.

“We don’t know what to expect because we haven’t seen the other crews so we’ll put our toe in the water and see what we can come up with.”

Lack of numbers forced their hand on October 15 at Evans Head, but Rolff said they were in much better shape this weekend.

“Everybody is back on deck for us this weekend and we’ve got a spare in both the crews which helps,” he said.

They will look to start their 2016/17 season where they left off last year, especially in the ladies division.

“The 160 men had a colourful season last year with injuries and eventually finished sixth overall where the ladies had a successful season and finished third,” Rolff said.
