On December 21 I read with interest two letters to the editor, titled ‘Land destruction’ and the other ‘Different Rules’. I agree with both writers, the council is letting trees be cut down without any thought. As long as the money is stumped up you can turn any property into a wasteland and cut down every single tree.

What a shame that the area on the north side of Ocean Drive, Lakewood was cleared. I think a better way would have been to leave some trees along the roadside and have the estate behind them. Wouldn’t that have better than just knocking every single one of them down? The council is hell bent on making Port Macquarie as big as it can by opening up suburbs everywhere but there seems to be a distinct lack of infrastructure to accommodate the building that is going on.
What about water? And don’t anybody tell me that we have enough to go with the building that is happening. What about the roads? Oh yeah, I suppose they would be alright if we were living in a third world country, but we don’t.
I remember writing some time ago about the land that people wanted to clear at North Haven. It’s the parkland that fronts the Camden Haven Inlet and runs off The Parade between Leighton Close and Edith Street. I remember at the time a few people screaming about what amounted to the cleaning up of a rubbishy area of rat and snake infested weeds and bushes, and they were worried about birds that would have to relocate to trees a very short distance away. I remember Mr. and Mrs. Someone-I’ve-forgotten, with about 15 letters after both their names being really worried about this ‘destruction’.
Why don’t we hear from them about the destruction elsewhere. Oh that’s right, they don’t live out there. To clean this area at North Haven still makes sense to 99.9% of people who live near there, or visit. Do it council, and make it is as accessible and friendly as the areas surrounding it.
Our council needs to wake up and do something that makes sense. Build infrastructure to care for the suburbs we have now before you start giving the OK for anymore destruction.
