Ice has a melting temperature of 0°C. A lot of energy is required to change the state of the ice from solid ice to liquid water. This energy is absorbed from the other items in the esky and from the walls of the esky. While the ice is melting, both the ice and the water it now sits in, stays at 0°C until all of the ice has become a liquid. The esky therefore stays at about 0°C. Hence the time to replace the ice is just before it has melted.
It is common practice to refill a soft drink bottle with water and freeze it to use as an ice brick in an esky. They are easy to freeze. They don’t create a mess in your freezer and prevent the esky from becoming a swimming pool of molten ice.
My esky stays closer to -2°C. I achieve this by using sea water in my ice bricks. The melting temperature of sea water is about -2°C, so while the sea water ice blocks melt in my esky, my esky stays at -2°C.
Next time you are down at the beach, bring home a few bottles of natures finest sea water to keep your drinks cooler.
Have a great Australia Day.

WATER WORRIES
I would like to say to Daryl Lane (Laurieton) how correct he is to worry about water. I have written to the council raising my concerns also. This was the councils response:
Water supply is under regular review, with the need to secure a safe supply and affordable supply of paramount concern. Planned future major capital works include a number of projects that will increase yield potential and additional redundancy in the system. Council is also aware that it is not practical to have unlimited storage capacity and supply, hence the need for water restrictions during periods of extreme dry, low water flow or quality.
Council’s approach to water is determined by the NSW State Government. The current design capacity of our dams is based on population growth, demand projections and the expected flow that can be drawn from the Hastings River. Our water supply capacity has been designed for an expected population growth to at least 2040 based on current projections.

What a wonderful community
Lakeside Fashions at Lake Cathie had an unfortunate incident on December 30 with a car going through the front window.
Fortunately no one was injured.
As a small business owner it has been heartbreaking losing all the busy holiday trade.
But, wow, the other side of this unfortunate incident has shown me the wonderful support of my friends, customers and the local community.
How can I say thank you enough for all your help, love, warm wishes and loyalty, you have totally inspired me and blown me away with your kindness.
At this stage I am still going through the insurance process. I am hoping by mid February that Lakeside Fashions doors will be reopened and we will be back bigger, better and with lots of great fashions!

Honesty is priceless
I returned home after my shopping trip today (Monday January 16) and realised I had left my handbag hanging on the shopping trolley at Lakewood shopping centre carpark. I am truly grateful to the couple who found my bag and handed it in to staff at Woolies. I am so lucky that two wonderful, honest people found my bag. Thank you so much.
