In previous years volunteers were scarce and the hardy few were unable to make a big dent in the litter problem.
In 2016, organisers boosted their appeal to the public for help and it paid off.
Groups tackled both land and waterways retrieving piles of rubbish from the local environment.
Coordinator Sue Baker said, "Mayor Peter Besseling joined volunteers working along the waterfront, where much less rubbish was collected than normal. A big thanks is due to the growing band of people who pick up rubbish every time they walk and to the general public for disposing of their rubbish more carefully."
Oranised by Fiona McEwen from Camden Haven Cruises and supplied with two punts from Armstrong's Oysters, members of Queens Lake Sailing Club and several Dunbogan families made a massive haul from the river itself.
A total of four cubic metres of rubbish was retrieved including twenty tyres and six bicycles. Alarmingly several car batteries were also found, leaking dangerous acid into the water. Volunteers dived to retrieve rubbish from the riverbed using grappling devices.
Debbie Geronomi, her family, friends and students from her Marine Studies class at Camden Haven High School, cleaned up the beach at Lewi's Corner.
Apart from all the large rubbish, they collected a massive 8kg worth of small pieces of hard plastic - the debris that is being ingested by marine life.
This year organisers are hoping to call on the community to spare a few hours.
