Port Macquarie’s Town  and Flynns beaches were both closed on Monday to swimming following a weekend of torrential rainfall.

Lifeguard supervisor James Turnham said some of the logs washed up on Town Beach were between 10 to 15 metres long.

“It is just far too dangerous to open the beaches and there is still more debris being washed down the river,” he said.

“We can expect even more debris to be washed up – particularly on Town Beach – over the coming days

“I would suspect that council will come along and clean it up once the debris stops washing in which could be a few days’ time.

“But it is a bit of a tourist attraction at the moment. We had people down here sawing away at some of the debris … there’s even a two seater bench seat.”

Mr Turnham said Flynns Beach was closed due to the colour of the water although there was not much debris washed up.

“It is gross. But the conditions aren’t that great anyway,” he added.

The lifeguard supervisor said local surf schools had called off their lessons for the day.

“Most people don’t want to go in (the water) and we will be certainly be warning people about the dangerous conditions.

“The local surf schools have called off their lessons for the next few days.”
