The legacy of being the first LEGENDAIRY Capital of NSW will remain front and centre in Comboyne which used its $2,500 prize money to buy a fibreglass cow.
It’s has been painted by a local artist and is now prominently installed in the middle of town next to the community centre.
Port Macquarie Hastings Council community engagement officer, Paul Koch, who helped Comboyne with its submission, said the community of about 700 people on the NSW mid-north coast had enjoyed being the LEGENDAIRY Capital.
“Comboyne is a strong little community and being NSW’s LEGENDAIRY Capital really worked for them,” he said.
“Everyone was pretty stoked. They have the cow in a prominent position and everything the town has done over the past two years has referred to their LEGENDAIRY Capital status.”
Now the Comboyne community wants another strong dairying region to enjoy the same benefits.
“It’s definitely a great promotion for a regional community and for the role that dairy plays,” Mr Koch said.
“I’m sure there are other regional towns that would enjoy just as much benefit as Comboyne has from being awarded the title.”
Dairy Australia’s DairyNSW regional manager Greg Duncan described the LEGENDAIRY Capital initiative as a unique opportunity for many regional communities to come together and raise awareness about their dairying success.
“It also allows them to take the opportunity to identify just how much they have achieved,” he said.
“We have numerous organisations, communities and farmer groups across NSW that are leading a positive change and highlighting the potential that exists within our dairy industry.”
Mr Duncan said it was tremendous to see Comboyne recognised and he was sure many other communities would want to highlight what makes them special.
“I’m hoping that like Comboyne’s community, we see others opportunity use this opportunity to raise the profile of themselves and their region.”
Dairy Australia is calling on people across Australia’s eight dairy regions - Gippsland, south west Victoria, the Murray region, Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and the Subtropical region - to nominate their town for the prestigious title by sharing stories about what makes their town LEGENDAIRY.
One finalist from each of the eight regions will receive $2,500 to invest in a community project, and one of those towns will then go on to secure the coveted title of Australia's LEGENDAIRY Capital 2017, receiving an additional grant of $7,500.
Nominations are open until 5pm on April 10 2017.
