It is often the case that the District Governor’s partner accepts the challenge to raise funds for a cause of their choosing.
Rotarian Barbara Jackson has decided to support cancer research and is very aware that each of us have been touched by cancer in some way with the disease affecting friends or family.
“We know cancer treatment is improving and we are inching closer to a cure but it is vital that we continue to support research efforts,” Barbara said.
Barbara has been supported by over 1500 Rotarians in the 56 Rotary clubs in our District 9650 as well as local groups like Kendall Kettles who have made a star quilt to raffle.
Lightning Ridge Rotarians donated two opal doublets to raffle to help get to the necessary total of $38,500. Already the tally is half way there.
Barbara’s fundraising efforts will provide financial assistance through Australian Rotary Health for a student to complete three years of research gaining a PhD.
The university that the successful student is enrolled will also contribute to the costs of study.
Students from all states of Australia were eligible to apply and the successful scholar was Erin Lawrence from the University of Melbourne.
The research must be carried out in Australia and we look forward to receiving progress reports from Erin as her research progresses over the next three years.
A fundraising event hosted by the Rotary Club of Laurieton on Monday April 10 at the Laurieton United Services Club at 6pm will support Barbara’s project.
Tickets are $20 per person which includes dinner and an opportunity to hear further from Barbara about her project and from local MP Leslie Williams who will talk about the importance of volunteering in our community.
There will also be a raffle and auction on the night and as always any donations from local businesses and individuals will be very much appreciated.
Tickets are available at Laurieton United Services Club and for further information about the evening please contact President Graham Hare - 0438 502 076.
