Their concert performance at 4pm will be introduced with a pre-concert talk at 3pm exploring the much contested idea that music is a language of emotion. Goetz Richter, founder of the PhiloMusica series and associate professor at the University of Sydney will introduce the concert program.
“The program of 19th century music will form an exciting opportunity to explore a real battle in music history- the battle between the ‘new-school’ of Liszt and Wagner that saw music as a language of feeling and the view of the traditionalists that insisted that music was merely sounding, moving form. Anyone interested in how music works and why we are so enchanted by it should find this battle captivating,” Richter said.
The attendance at the pre-concert talk is free for ticket holders to the 4pm concert. Founded in 2014, the Kendall PhiloMusica series explores themes in music related to philosophy and other art forms. Further events are planned for June 18 and October 28. All proceeds from the series of concerts and talks benefit the Kendall National Violin Competition.
