In what was only their third game together, the Middle Rock Magpies baseball team again performed beyond expectations to record a 21 to 7 victory over the Port Macquarie Pirates.
On a spectacular Saturday night in Wauchope, the Magpies played under lights recording their second win on the trot following last week’s 19 to 7 win over the Wauchope Giants.
Having formed just three months ago, the Magpies have been displaying early promise and potential. Last weekend they fielded and batted as though they had been a baseball force for several years.
“The atmosphere amongst the players and their supporters was palpable and certainly a carry over from the teams weekly training sessions which have seen the Magpies journey from a newly established outfit with many who had never played before to a cohesive team who are putting all they are learning into practice on the baseball diamond,” said coach Marty Dures.
The Magpies pitchers were Warren Collins and Mike van Eck. Both men throwing plenty of strikes while keeping the Pirates' batters contained. The Pirates did manage a couple of solid hits however Magpies players Todd Reid and Peter Kirkpatrick executed great fielding to dismiss their batters.
When the Middle Rock Magpies came to bat it was an encouraging display of safe, powerful and accurate hitting. Warren Collins had five safe hits, Rod Dures had four safe hits and two safe hits to Mike van Eck, Reid Farrell, Ryan Sherwood, Trent Lavelle, Peter Kirkpatrick. Kye Dures had one safe hit.
Marty Dures said the 21 to 7 win was testament to great teamwork and bringing all that the Magpies have learnt at training and putting it into practice on the field.
