LETTER: Headland issue needs balance

Cathy Rushton submitted an idea to transform Camden Head to an open space. The pictures above show the horse paddock that was the area 30 years ago, to the tree/shrubs area (centre) and her vision (right).

I would like to add something to the dialogue on the small area at the end of Camden Head Rd.

Environmentally, the control of a few dozen Melaleuca /Tea-tree/Banksia bushes in this area would be have little affect. One has only to glance around to see the millions of trees in the Camden Head area (including the adjacent Kattang Nature Reserve) to see the minute impact this would have on the native birds and animals.

Hearsay has it that some remnant old growth rain forest remains at Camden Head and could be impacted. However, that does not apply here as it was all cleared many years ago.

I noted Christine Purvis' comments and would like to take her to task on a few points.

A quick visit to this area first would have given her a more balanced opinion of the limited size and scope of what is being proposed.

Filtered views would be great, instead of the blocked, or soon to be blocked views under discussion.

Her suggestion that 'those with mobility issues can be driven elsewhere” to see similar views is discriminatory and shows no empathy towards the disabled.

The very small area under discussion is hardly the vast area she refers to in her online letter.

A quick search on Google Maps (type in 171 Camden Head Road) will give a good indication of what this area could look like.

The extreme views of a small minority should not be allowed to dictate policy in this matter. Environmental issues are important, but should balanced against human needs and enjoyments.

Please PMHC, don't sit on your hands on this one. Come and talk to the people. Where is the famous community consultation we hear so much about? Maybe pick a peak tourist time and canvas their opinions as well. This could allow for a more balanced “view”.
