All week the weather forecast had been for heavy rain and damaging winds and although the practice round on Friday saw a lot of rain fall. It cleared in time for the first round on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning's second round was played on a beautiful Camden Haven autumn morning.
The goal for 2017 was to get over 100 starters for the first time since the tournament commenced at KCC three years ago and we achieved it by having 106 players hit off in the first round.
With the course quite damp, scoring was always going to be difficult on the tight and tricky par 70 black course for the boys but Jye Pickin from Avondale Golf Club made it all seem so easy playing unbelievably great golf to win the boys division by 9 shots shooting rounds of 67 and 66 - 133, 7 under par. Runner-up with what would normally be a winning score of 2 over par 142 was Josh Gadd from Concord Golf Club.
The girls playing the par 71 red course found the going a lot tougher and after an exciting back nine holes on Sunday when anyone of five girls could have won the tournament, it was finally left to Yuka Lin from the Lakes Golf Club and Yerin Kim from Concord Golf Club to play off for the title after they both finished with a total of 153, 11 over par. Yuka won the first play off hole to be crowned the 2017 champion. Both girls are only 14 years old so they can expect to fight out many more JNJG tournaments in the coming years.
KCC had five juniors representing the club in various age divisions and they all acquitted themselves extremely well not only with their excellent play but with the fine sportsmanship they displayed. Ben Morgan playing is his last JNJG Junior tournament before he turns 18 had rounds of 73 and 73 for a 146 total. Great golf Ben and good luck with your senior golf. Fletcher Murray who at 15 years of age has a very bright golfing future in front of him, had rounds of 75 and 77 for a 152 total.
In the girls divisions, Pyper Hollis in the 14/15 years age group showed just how promising a golfer she is by recovering from Saturday's disastrous round of 94 by shooting 78 on Sunday to win the nett trophy in her division by 3 shots with a total of 146. Well done Pyper. Quedesha Golledge (playing in only her second JNJG tournament) found the course extremely difficult but battled away in the under 13 years division and played some very good golf. Quid will learn from the experience and will only get better the more she plays. Our youngest junior Vanna Limeburner playing in her first JNJG tournament showed just what a talent she is going to be. In the girls stableford division for long handicappers, Vanna had 32 and 36 points to finish in 3rd place, simply a great result.
So it's all over for another year and we look forward to the 2018 JNJG Junior Masters which will take place on Saturday/Sunday May 19/20. We are hopeful that we might have a field of around 120 of the states best young golfers which will be close to capacity. KCC and the Junior Golf Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers who gave of their time on both Saturday and Sunday to ensure that the tournament ran smoothly both on the course and at the food outlets.
