Olivia’s ‘Abstract Crocodile’ artwork was one of 50 out of 876 entries selected by judges to form the 2017 Operation Art Touring Exhibition.
Lake Cathie Public School was very excited to enter the Operation Art initiative in 2016. As a brand new school in 2015 they wanted to become involved in this great opportunity and were fortunate enough to have an artwork selected to tour in 2017.
Olivia, now in year 2, created her artwork last year using pencils, oil pastels and paint. This activity was based on a whole class literacy stimulus, where she was asked to reflect on the text and visualise the main character from the text as an artwork.
“I enjoyed making this crocodile artwork,” Olivia said. “I had to draw in pencil, colour with oil pastels and paint a wash over the background. SNAP SNAP!”
Operation Art is an initiative of the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in association with the Department of Education and encourages students to create artworks for children in hospital.
Over 700 artworks are submitted annually by schools across NSW and they are all exhibited at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park.
The 50 works in this exhibition were selected by judges to form the Operation Art Touring Exhibition.
These artworks are exhibited at the Art Gallery of NSW and in regional art galleries.
Following this tour they become part of the Hospital’s permanent art collection for children and their families to enjoy.
