Project committee member Clare Gray said a number of fundraising events had taken place over the last month to help support the future building of the park.
Mrs Gray said it is important for children to be active especially considering the high rate of obesity in Australia.
The project is also designed to address the public’s safety concerns.
“Youth have been seen skating on their boards or scooters around our car parks and on our roads,” Mrs Gray said.
“It will cause a fatal incident one day if these facilities are not available in our town.”
The Lake Cathie Skate and Recreation Park Project was initiated by the Lake Cathie Bonny Hills Lions Club as a result of a growing need for a recreational facility for the youth of Lake Cathie. The group is working with the assistance of the Lions Club and the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.
The construction of the park is expected to cost about $400,000 to $500,000.
The group meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 6.30pm at the Lake Cathie Bowling Club and interested members of the public are invited to attend.
