The 17-year-old progressed to the quarter-final stage of the competition, only to be pipped by Narrabeen product Tru Starling.

On a day more suited to ducks than surfers with wave height no more than one or two feet, Starling registered a score of 7.60 while Green fell just short with a 6.36.

Not only did she bow out of the competition in the quarter final stage, history repeated as she missed progressing to the national titles by a single position.

12 months ago, the Port Macquarie product, who attends school in Taree, missed the national titles by one place.

The teenager remained hopeful of again gaining a place in the national titles.

Last year she was lucky to gain a wildcard into the national titles after missing out by the same margin.

“There is still a chance of making the national titles if someone gets injured or something,” she said.

“Hopefully they need a reserve and I get called up, but I’ve got another chance at the school surfing titles on Wednesday.”

Conditions at Rainbow Beach on Tuesday were unhelpful to quality surfing and luck played a significant role in determining semi-final and final positions.

“It was very small and I just couldn’t find any waves that had potential for me to do a turn or anything and I don’t really like small waves, I find it really difficult,” Green said.

“I was happy to get to the quarter-finals, but I would have liked to get one more decent wave just so I got the fifth-place in the competition.

“I ended up sixth and just missed out on the Australian titles.”

Despite the disappointment, Green remained satisfied with how she surfed throughout the competition.

“I surfed good in the previous heats and was pretty happy I got good scores and did the best I can,” she said.

“You can’t really prepare for (when the waves are that small), you just go for it and hope for the best.

“You can’t be disappointed when it wasn’t really that much in your control.”

Fellow local competitors Jenna Cutting, Marcus Whillock and Judd Brown were eliminated early in the competition.

Cutting finished third in Green’s round three heat, while Whillock also bowed out in the third round.

Brown didn’t progress past the repecharge rounds.

With the exception of the rain-effected second day on Sunday, Surfing NSW media manager Ethan Smith said conditions had been perfect.

“Any time you deal with Mother Nature you expect a few complaints, but the conditions for us have been really decent,” he said.

“We couldn’t have asked for much more.”
